I went through 3 refurbished D800s last week -- all three had AF problems. It's a lottery nowadays, especially with Nikon bodies.

I honestly don't know how Nikon stays in business with this kind of terrible service. It's just miserable!

Adorama. I work in the city, so to me it's a 10 minute trip to 6th and 18th. Speaking of bad luck: 3 D7000s, 3 Sigma 35 1.4s and 3 D800s for the last two months. I'm done with Nikon and Sigma - going back to 5D MKII and L glass.

While I've never heard of Sigma as a champion of minimal sample variation, I find the likelihood that you got SIX bad Nikon bodies in a short period of time very unlikely. I can't really speak to the differences in the Nikon and Canon AF system, but I do know that there is a fairy high degree of complexity in the system, and if you aren't resetting the camera it is easy for some obscure setting somewhere to throw things out of whack.

The first thing I do on any used or unfamiliar body is hit Nikon's "magic buttons of happiness" (the two green reset buttons).

All that said, if I was buying a refurb Nikon body, I'd surely get an extended warranty - 90 days wouldn't make things comfortable for me given their recent track record. Sad. They've got an amazing lineup, but their execution and customer service lately haven't been stellar...

My replacement refurb d800 arrived today and it has the same AF issues. I'm really frustrated!

As much as I see the potential of this camera, I am getting rather upset. Between my d7000, d600, and now d800 issues, I'm losing faith in Nikon!

Should I send it back for another replacement (#3) or just give up all together?

What a shame Nikon!!!!

I must have had superior luck, but I have never had a problem with any camera. My D700 is spot on, my buddy has a D7000 (and now D600) and his are all perfect as well - and the 600 has no oil on the sensor (or dust/whatever).

Yeah had a guy with a d600 telling me how he loved his d600 too. No issues. Until he took a shot of some mountain sky view. Spots everywhere. Feels like chicken pox on steroids. <shiver>

What I am most puzzled is how Nikon is handling all these well documented issues. Well at least the D5200 is problem free.

I got a d800e from adorama and the only problem I had was that the charger was DOA. An e-mail to adorama and they sent me a new one free of charge. Add to that, Nikon fixed the broken one since it was in warranty (though the warranty process kind of sucked).

I thought I had left focus issues with my camera at first but after re-doing the test I think it was user error the first time around. In any case, I'm loving the d800e!!! (coming from Canon 5dmk3 and L lenses).

What is it you like better about the D800e vs. 5d3/etc? I have been a Canon 5d2 user for a long time, have been trying out a Nikon D800 with 35 f/1.4g and 85 f/1.8g and finding a lot to like about the camera but a lot to dislike about the lenses. The Nikon lenses have been one of the main reasons I am wanting to try a 5d3 now.

Wow, I'm selling a brand new unopened D600 for 1,800 - I hope this doesn't hinder my sale.

I don't think some of those are great savings. I paid about $2,000 Canadian with tax for my D600 body new from dealer. That being said, I had it replaced once, cleaned monthly since the sensor was soooo dirty (all your shots over f2.8 had major cloning), sent it in to Nikon for a look see and they replaced the shutter and cleaned it (not sure about that or they didn't clean it well). I would make sure it has full warrantee on it because of their issues. But headaches aside, I love the D600, I only wish it had more frames/sec (that's why I didn't choose the D800 - I am not willing to give up a single frame). I did pick up a 70-200 2.8 refurb and saved about $700. I'll have to work it hard to see if it will stand up.
