Dan Heitman and I went to Herbert Lake in Banff National Park on Sunday.

It was a rather flat day for light.

Here are the best shots I took of the day.

You made a good attempt here with some rather bad lighting. The first 3 are fine, but #4 I think really works very well.

Jim: After looking at the pictures after a time, I agree that 4 has the nicest light. I guess the moral of the story is that grey days just do not work. Thanks for your encouragement. Much appreciated. Scott

Even b/w is does not improve the picture.

Hey Scott I was watching these build character and #4 nicely exploded!

I do think #3 is quite wonderful, great quality of low light and mood on this one

I would try again when there is better light. I can tell its an amazing area worthy of another visit.

Beautiful even without the perfect light. It's all about getting out and enjoying nature whether one is fishing, hiking, photographing, or whatever the passion. Even if I don't catch a trout while fly fishing, it is still a grand day!

Very sweet - looks pretty cold too! I think the last is the best, but I like the touch of color in the first too.

Also, when shooting grand landscapes like this one its sometimes an all or nothing kinda deal on the wide angle shots. If the light does not cooperate for the wide shot you can try other shots as well maybe even more telephoto shots, macro shots etc. In the summer when the light is flat/cloudy and bad for the wide shot its a great moment to shoot waterfalls and rivers since the lower contrast helps in getting good detail in all areas.

Further proof that just because the weather isn't dramatic, a good photographer in a spectacular place can still result in some fine images.
And these are fine images.
