p.1 #1 · UPDATED - Grand Canyon Winter Sunrise

This was taken on my winter annual trip to the SW this year. Most of the time, I end up with clear skies over the GC, but this time there was one morning when I had some really colorful clouds overhead at sunrise.

This image was a blended shot of several exposures to capture the tonal range. Let me know what you think and thanks for looking

Note - the second shot is a re-try based on the (much appreciated) advice in this thread. C&C is always welcome, that's why I like posting here

I think that it has great color, great light and great composition, not to mention a cool starburst. Very nice image.

Hey Steve,

Pretty cool here. I like the look of this, yet there is a part of me that says it's a bit too bright in areas away from the sun's direction. But the overall detail is really cool, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt...

great scene. Though it does strike me as a bit harsh. Too much black, almost too sharp.

A little crunchy for me and a bit bright in the shadowed areas, but other than that it's a wonderful image. That starburst is pretty darn cool!

Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions. I've added a second image at the top with a just a little darker shadows and less sharpening (I think I forgot to double-check it when I used my web-size action PS - I agree the first try was a bit too crunchy)

Still needs to be softer for my taste. I knocked a bunch of clarity and contrast out... adding a bit more vibrance back and like the look better. IMO, the contrast/clarity on the rocks is distracting in an otherwise mellow shot.

The edit is better, but the parts that should be in shadow are still too light for my tastes.

I was thinking the same thing. I keep trying to see what is different between the two images.

I'm a sucker for sunbursts. Great job. I don't mind the lighter shadows, from my experience light really tends to bounce around those sandstone canyons and helps fill in the shadows.

I like a lot about the shot but being too sharp hurts it. It could be the compression causing that over-sharpened too. Have a full-res we can look at?
