p.1 #1 · Canon EOS-1D X Firmware v1.2.1 Released!

Firmware Version 1.2.1 incorporates the following improvements and fixes:

The function to disable the Image size selection button has been added.
Fixes a phenomenon in which Err 70 and Err 80 may occur during certain shooting conditions.

Firmware Version 1.2.1 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.1.1. The firmware update takes approximately seven minutes.

All done! It seemed to go smoothly, however my camera seemed to hang at 23% for about 2 minutes or so. Glad I used a fully charged battery!

Done successfully. Slow moving upgrade, hung at around 10%, 23%...45..and 93%...but eventually completed. As per canon:

* The firmware update takes approximately seven minutes.

* Please see the instruction manual "EOS-1D X Firmware Version 1.2.x Additional Function" (PDF file) included in the downloaded firmware 1.2.1 folder for information on how to intentionally disable this button, after the firmware update 1.2.1 has been installed in the camera.

The question is WHY? That's the little button on the lower left that allows you to either change CF cards or select RAW-L-M-S, etc.

Of all the settings that one can easily set by accident on the 1D-X, this surely doesn't seem like one of them.

Yet someone felt it so important that it warranted a dedicated FW update.

It seems more like a feature that would have gotten added along with a list of other minor changes in a more comprehensive FW update.

i do not recollect any other setting that can be changed accidentally
for example when the camera is hanging on your neck and bumps in your body

really happy they fixed it, same for Err80

But after pressing the button, one still has to turn a dial to change the size, right?

depends on the definition of "one"

the dial could be rotated / pressed by your body, jacket

there were a couple of threads on this issue a while back

I haven't had the size change on the file, but I have had several err80 occurrences. I am a hobby photographer, not making my living on the camera, but the fixes are clearly aimed that those that do. Imagine getting the best shot and having err80? That would be bad. Or needing the file size to be 20MB and accidentally it shifts and you don't know, equally bad.

Thanks Canon for putting these fixes through....

*shaking head* Just got my 1DX back from CPS yesterday and would've thought they'd applied the firmware upgrade. So I guess 1-2 days before, not even the repair center knows about new "things".

...or they don't care enough to upgrade.

...or they don't want to install 1.2.1 before it's announced as not to start an avalanche of rumors about what it may or may not be doing.

When you download the new firmware, there is also a PDF file with instructions. Follow the instructions.

Yes, the PDF instructions are most helpful. But it's really simple: download zip file to computer. Insert camera formatted CF card and copy FIR file to it. Confirm it's about 32Mb. Insert CF to camera and turn on. Go to MENU and find the firmware option (Wrench 6). Use SET to select and follow instructions. It will tell you what version you currently have (1.1.1) and ask if you want to update. When you say yes, it will automatically read the CF card.
I only offer this, as the camera does NOT automatically update the firmware just because you insert the CF card into the body and turn it on. You must actively select the update option through the menu system, and confirm more than once that you want to do this.
It takes about 7 minutes.
