Is there a silent firmware upgrade for the 800mm IS? I know there is a hardware upgrade for the 800mm IS.

Pogito, what are you aiming at specifically with that ?

As you know, there has been a recall (effectively) on certain early 800s due to IS noise on 5DMkIII. We were told the recall work included a replacement of the main electronic assembly inside the lens. If during that process they also changed the lens firmware, that sort of info I haven't seen.

To the best of my knowledge, there hasn't been any 800L firmware upgrade announced by Canon. As far as " silent" upgrades go, all I can tell you is that my 2012 800L behaves the same way my previous 2011 800L did.....no apparent change there.

Probably the experts on other websites such as Naturescapes net know more about it than I do, so you should inquire there too.

White Prime Guru,

I was told there was a firmware for the 800mm IS from a very reliable trustworthy source. I wondered if my source was confused or if there is actually a firmware for it.

A software fix would be cheaper/easier than the electronic assembly that was made public last year.

Also do I need to apply the fix if I were to skip the 5D3 and went straight to a 1D X or 1D C?

That is a good question. I think you should bring your 800L up to date either way, because there is an obsolete electronic assembly in it now,

I agree about having it done but my worry is I would be the first one to have it done locally for either the 200/2 or 800/5.6.

AFAIK there are only about 6 people with the lens and none of them bothered with the 5D3. They either stuck with older bodies or went straight to the 1D X.

Well, Canon Canada hasn't done very many of those retrofits either, since our market for lenses such as 200 f/2 IS and 800L is also small compared to the US market.

However, it took them a few weeks to retrofit my 200 f/2 IS (the 800L didn't need it because it was a late model, and most of that time was spent waiting for the replacement main flexboard from Japan), and the job seems to have been done OK, because my lens behaved as well as it had ever done before.

I haven't had 5DIII available to me, thus I could not check the lens for IS noise before or after the retrofit.

Hmm First I've read of these retrofits. Do you know if there is one for the 300 f/2.8 IS?

I asked the same question to Canon Proservices Canada about the 800mm 200mm and 300 mm and had the following response:

--------------
"Thank you for your E-mail inquiry regarding firmware updates.

For the EF200mm F2L IS USM, there is a repair for abnormal noise during IS operation when used in conjunction with a 5D Mark III body. If you have this lens it would need to come into service for repair. Otherwise, there are 2 specific lenses (300 F2.8) that were affected with back focus when used with a 1.4x extender.

I have not found any other info for the other versions of the lenses mentioned."

I had the IS noise/vibration in VF with both 5D3 and 1DX on my 800. Canon replaced the main power board in the lens, but didn't mention firmware.

On a related 800mm note, have you see the price tag for the new Nikon 800mm? It makes the Canon look like a bargain!

$17,899, say B&H. Suck it, Leica!

Cumpadre, have you seen the anticipated price of Canon 800L MkII ?

(Too bad the three Nikon 800 sample images from their website look as if they were taken with a $350 Opteka long lens. Simply an incredible example of their marketing incompetence.)

No señor, ¡I have not! The 800 is kinda new-ish, I can't imagine them bothering with their slide rules so soon...

Peter & siri:

I believe the rumor that a new Canon 200mm IS & 800mm IS will be released, as soon as 2020.

These are the various reasons why it will happen then

1) Nikon's 200 VR2 & 800 VR are still at a disadvantage when it comes to lens weight to Canon. VR are now the same number of stops to Canon's IS. Only advantage of the Nikons are the the optical coating and the dedicated TC of the 800mm VR.

2) Both Canon lens were announced in 2007 and shipped 2008. These make both lens 5-6 years old. All the Series 1 super teles with IS were made obsolete by 2011 when the Series 2 super teles with IS were announced. That's a 12 year product cycle.

3) 200/1.8, the predecessor of the 200/2 IS, was announced in 1988 and discontinued in 2003. That's a good 15 years.

4. Here is a list of L lenses that need to be updated due to their lens age. All these lenses probably sell more volume in a week than either white primes in its whole production run.

1993 - EF 400mm f/5.6L USM
1993 - EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM
1995 - EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
1996 - EF200mm f/2.8L II USM
1996 - EF180mm f/3.5L Macro USM
1996 - EF 135mm f/2L USM
1997 - EF300mm f/4L IS USM
1998 - EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
1998 - EF 35mm f/1.4L USM
1999 - EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
2003 - EF17-40mm f/4L USM
2004 - EF28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM

5. Here is a list of non-L EF lenses that need to be updated due to their lens age. All these lenses probably sell more volume in one day than either white primes in its whole production run.

1987 EF 135mm f/2.8 with Softfocus
1987 EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro
1990 EF 50mm f/1.8 II
1991 TS-E45mm f/2.8
1991 TS-E90mm f/2.8
1991 EF 100mm f/2 USM
1992 EF 20mm f/2.8 USM
1992 EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
1993 EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
1995 EF 28 f/1.8 USM

6. As mentioned on 4 & 5 both lenses are not volume sellers. So whether they update this tomorrow or next decade they it wouldnt sell all that much.

I'd only upgrade if they can reduce the weight a further 25% or more and increase the f-number to say by 1/2 or a full stop.

Now, I could be wrong so dont bother reading this anymore.
