Seems I just updated firmware. I find the new "improvement" interesting as my D4 has no problem tracking and maintaining focus, even when using TCs.

That's weird Steve, After the last update, my D4 performed better, especially when using my TC20EII.

I thought it was odd too. I did not re-do my af fine tune, so maybe I was the problem. However, I did note that the new update improves AF-C tracking - exactly what I was having problems with after the first update. Weird.

I wish they would allow trap focusing again (and with manual focus lenses would be a God send). And have AF-S function like it should when AF-On is used.

Updated and have not noticed any difference. Was only playing around with it attached to the WA lens. Will try it with the big gun tonight.

I updated the firmware even though I already thought the D4 focus was pretty killer. Some good early feedback from D4 users over at DPR.

Can I go back to the previous firmware? Maybe it's my technique, but my keeper rates is not very good after the update. I can't even get sharp captures with seagulls in flight! The 600mm was on the tripod as well as handheld. Weird....

I was up in the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge last Sunday in the central valley of northern California, shooting birds. This was the first time I was using my D4 after the firmware upgrade. My un-scientific seat of the pants review is that I can't really tell much of a difference. Focus was already lightning fast and accurate, and it is at least as fast now--I don't even know if I could notice faster focusing than i was experiencing prior. However, when i look at these shots I am really happy with some of the focus detail, so maybe there is something to this firmware upgrade after all. I will probably post some bird closeups in the next day or so on the wildlife board. Anyway, for me at least I can say the firmware might have improved things a bit, but I had no issues before so it is really hard to tell. I wish Nikon would give some better metrics around what the expected benefits are to firmware upgrades.
