Living in China , with their huge population of newly made mega-rich (some of which are fanatical bird togs), I can state unequivocally that the price tag would hardly even register - they can easily (and I've seen it many times) spend that a night on dinner with friends. I'm sure there is a huge market for it here. For the rest of us mere mortals without those 000000s on our bank balances it will merely be a dream lens such as mega-cars like a Ferrari or Aston Martin are for many of us

Most of them can't read/write/speak English either.

Surprisingly enough there's not much call for it here. I just wonder how on earth they manage to get by.

I actually played with one at this year's CES show. It's an impressive lens and focuses quickly, handles nice, although I would not want to try to handhold it. 18K is a LOT though - a 600mm and 1.7TC gets you to the same place as the 800 and it's TC for a lot less cash. Still, I'd love to have one

The electromagnetic diaphragm is interesting, looks like they might be shifting away from the lever operated aperture.
It opens up a number of questions, of course... will any current bodies be compatible with a firmware upgrade (i.e. is it using the same number of electrical contacts)? I have to assume the lens has an aperture lever for legacy compatibility?
More importantly, is this lens really the 800mm f/5.6G AF-S VR ED IF N SIC FL E? Could we please squeeze a few more letters in there?

A nikon 70-300VR on a Nikon 1 gets you to the same place with larger aperture.... I dont think that the purpose of the 800mm is to simply get there. I guess that the final outcome also counts in the equation.

Yes, but a V1 isn't in the same league as say a D4 or D800 either. My point is that I think the quality would be very similar with a 600 + 1.7 as it would with an 800 and it's TC on an FX body. However, as I mentioned, I'd still love to have the 800!

Given the MTF charts, I'd be pretty surprised if the 600 + 1.7 had similar image quality.
Now, we might be into the area of splitting hairs - obviously we won't know until the 800 is available (and again, I know MTF isn't the final word, but it's what we have to go on now) - but the 800 + 1.25x teleconverter registers better on the MTF chart than the bare 600mm lens...

If the MTFs that nikon released are true I am not sure that the 600+1.7x combo would get you anywhere close. Still, I also think that this lens is more a "we-the-best" lens that would serve a tiny fraction of the market rather than a regular product.

Indeed, that's a breathtaking price for the 800VR, but consider it comes with a dedicated TC. Also consider Canon is rumoured to be updating it's own 800L to the MKII design, which no doubt will come in at a much higher price point as well.
