dorian Offline • • • Upload & Sell: On p.1 #1 · #538 great gray owl - perfect timing! well, i headed to ottawa for 3 days this weekend to photograph this magnificent bird, the great gray owl. they normally live in northern and central canada, but in some years they come a bit further south and east. this shot made the 14-hour drive from boston > ottawa > boston well worth it (more shots are posted in the nature/wildlife forum). braving temps of -10F/-23C was easy with subjects like this. he's about 28 inches long with a wingspan of about 6 feet! i hope you think he is as majestic as i do..... cheers dorian great gray owl   Canon EOS-1D Mark IV    400 mm    f/5.6    1/1000 sec    400 ISO    0.0 EV   Jan 29, 2013 at 02:02 AM

I have only seen a few from a distance on the ground while driving down the drive at night. We often hear them at night but they rarely come out at day. Years ago I was at a local park and one of the Rangers had an owl on his arm. The owl had been injured in the wild somehow and it was being nursed back to health. I asked to get a picture.
