p.1 #1 · Is Selling my 70-200vr1 a Dumb Idea?

i am thinking of selling my 70-200vr1. it is in mint condition and there seems to be good interest in the lens at these lower prices...

the problem is i don't use it that much. when i take wildlife i'm using my 500vr, and generally i keep my 24-70 on my d4 or use my 14-24 when i want to go wide. i also have a 28-300 that i mostly use for hiking trips when i can't take a lot of glass. that being said, on those few occaisons where i do use the vr1 it is great. i don't need the money but was actually thinking i could sell the vr1 and get a mint used 70-200vr f4 at some point when they become more widely available and take out some money.

i am torn. keep or sell, what say you all?

I'm a big proponent of keeping what you need, and divesting yourself of what you don't.

It's almost never a bad idea to sell off something you don't use in order to get something that you use more.

Especially with the cheaper f/4 version on the market now which would let you gain some money, some shelf space, and a lighter bag... seems like a good choice.

IMO, one should never sell anything that is useful. Just think of all the shots that you might miss over the next decade or 2.

More importantly, think of the workers that make this stuff. Every time you sell something, that means they don't sell a lens to the person that bought your stuff. Those folks depend on new sales for their very existence! They need to provide a home, food, and clothing for their spouses and children, who might even starve, if sales of new stuff goes too low. We've all seen the photos of those poor, unfortunates, living in squalor, fighting stray dogs for their next morsel of food. Seriously, do you want THAT on your conscience, living the rest of your life, knowing that you were responsible for their plight?

Don't do it, for the sake of the children!!

OTOH, that new 70-200 f/4 does look like a very nice lens.

No. Sell it. Don't let the lens hit the door on the way out

I'm thinking of doing the same just for the f4 version.

I sold my 70-200 vr 1 a while back...needed the money at the time, and i got more than i paid for it...i already had a 70-210 f4 as a backup, and an 85 1.8..the 70-210 is pretty sharp, super compact, and focuses closer than the 70-200...the 85 is sharper, faster, and lighter than the 70-200 could ever dream of being...i've only missed the 70-200 once since i sold it, when i needed some fast focusing (on a d7000), but i bought a d3, which took care of that problem...all my screw drive lenses focus fast now... :-)

Unless the weight is a big issue, I don't know why you'd trade in the f/2.8 VRI for an f/4 VRIII.

i haven't heard the 'for the children' argument before, that's precious...

i'm still not sure what to do, wish some used f4 versions would show up on the market...when i do use the 70-200 the results are great, and i probably don't need the 2.8 for what i tend to shoot..so i guess i'm talking myself into selling it.

I understand how you feel and I have faced similar dilemmas before. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is one of my favorite lenses even if I don't use the lens very often. Unless I need to sell the lens for economic reasons, I would not sell that lens. We always have lenses that we use more than others. For instance, after buying a 300mm f/2.8 last year I stopped using my 200-400mm and I have contemplated the idea of selling it. But I know that I won't since maybe one day I may need the lens for something and that day I will miss it. I won't sell any of my high quality Nikon lenses unless I need the money and even so, I would think twice.

I am in the same boat... I haven't touched my 70-200mm VRII much. I used it for 4 shoots since i traded up from my 70-200mm VR I so 4 times in 8 months. But heck for that matter have a case of lenses i don't used that much I go thru periods where i use some and don't use others. Now I am into birding so I only use the 300mm 2.8.

When I do portraits I use my 85 1.4, 105mm f2, Street stuff 24-70mm 2.8 or the 16-35mm
And kids stuff or around the house 50mm 1.4 wins really lately the Sony Nex has been wining cause it just sits on the table and I don't have to set it up.

So that leaves the 70-200mm sitting. I used the 70-200mm a lot for concerts and indoor shows but it's been sitting for a while and i probably won't use it again till my daughter starts dance/choir/piano/MX racing/pistol competitions (hey a dad and hope right) but she is only 18months so I have a few years.

But I just don't know if i could part with it. I guess if I traded it towards a 200-400mm or a 500/600vr maybe but otherwise I think it will stay. Maybe I should start a FT thread....

Do you have a trade in mind other than the f/4 I think its a good deal to trade for something new and shinny that you want. It's only money =)

defy, i basically have a full complement of glass obtained over several years (14-24, 24-70 which is my main lens, 70-200vr1, 28-300vr for hikes, 16mm fish, and my 500vr which is use a lot these days). the 70-200vr (either one) is just great, but i always find myself grabbing a different lens. so no, not trades in mind that i can think of.

I would only sell it if you have plans for the money if not just keep it.

Well, I had a buyer all lined up (really nice guy, local pro photographer), packed up the lens in the box last night, and.....decided to keep the lens.

What it boiled down to for me was that I didn't want to spend the money to get the vr2 since I don't use this focal length all that much, and I just didn't think I would be getting anything better with the new f4 than I have with the vr1. So for now I am keeping it. Maybe when there are more used f4's around I might consider the switch if I can take out some $$, but for now I will keep the vr1 for those occasional times that I use it. Thanks for the hand holding gang!

I am keeping mine.
I sometimes use it for Sports
but usually only in low light.
So, the f/4 would be a downgrade for me.
Besides, the f/2.8 is a good investment
as used prices for good Pro glass keep going up.

For the same price as the 70-200 f/4, I would get the AF-S Nikkor 300 f/4

This is me too. If I haven't used it in a long time then it goes out the door unless it's something I need as backup (for instance - I only keep my DX camera in case my FX camera fails at some point - I never use it).

I used my 70-200 VRII constantly though.. Love that lens!

I only sell stuff when I need money. So the question is do you need money? If yes than sell it.

If you bought something on impulse and dont need or use it...yea, then sell it.

Naw, fortunately I don't need the money and don't have any other gear I want instead so I just decided to hang onto it.
