Sayeret18 Offline • • • Upload & Sell: On p.1 #1 · For those who made the Canon to Nikon switch... I am looking for suggestions on Nikon lenses from those who made the Canon to Nikon switch. Currently, I have a 24-105L, a 100-400L and a 85 1.8 prime (I've been using a 40D). I am considering a move to Nikon for its superior crop bodies (either the D7000 or the new 5200 as I am intrigued by its sensor) and looking to roughly replicate this kit in cost, range and quality. I've read the reviews but am looking for some real world feedback. The Nikon 85 1.8 is an obvious equivalent. But what else would you recommend? Thanks in advance. Jan 28, 2013 at 02:36 PM

I just made the switch a few months ago but was shooting full frame and 1.3 crop with the 1 series canons. but i got the 70-200 and 24-70 f2.8's like i had with canon and highly recomend either one of those..both have amazing optics and build. I'll second David's recommendations but I'm a bargain guy and the bang for the buck lenses on the Nikon side are a bit different than Canon. First and foremost, I'd take a long hard look at all of the f/1.8 G lenses. Image quality per $$ is way, way up there (well, the 28mm isn't quite the bargain of the other 3). The 40mm f/2.8 Micro is in that amazing bargain category, too, in my mind. The Nikon 24-120 VR is every bit as good as the Canon 24-105, maybe better. It's pricier, too, but not inappropriately so. The 100-400 IS is one that I'd replace with the Sigma 50-500 OS rather than the old 80-400 Nikon. Jan 28, 2013 at 06:11 PM

Now that I look back, I like both system and would feel comfortable switching back to Canon or staying with Nikon. I like different aspects of both. I had - Canon 7D - Canon 30D - EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 - EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L - EF 180mm f/3.5 macro - EF 500mm f/4 L I now shoot with - two Nion D7000 bodies - Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 - Tokina 12-24mm f/4 - Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II - Nikon 85mm f/1.8 I shoot almost 90% of the time, with the 70-200 VR II. I am not a big fan of the 17-55 and shoot more with the Tokina. I hardly ever use the 85mm f/1.8. The 70-200 is really good and if I were to only shoot with 1 lens, this would be it. The D700 is my current body of choice, also what I had earlier this year. The lenses en route to me at the moment are the 28 1.8 G and 50 1.4 G. Owned the 1.8 G 50mm and really enjoyed it as well. You dont mention what body(s) you use on Canon side - I made the switch T3i > 7D > D700, D5100 > D7000 > D800 and another D7000 currently. Very happy, mostly with the deadly accurate AF. Only thing I miss about Canon is the much lower prices of gear on the used market. Upside is Nikon holds value very well I guess there. I'll throw in a plug for Sigma as well, they are producing some great pro 'bargain' glass, my 85 1.4 is one of the lenses I won't part with but Sigma had the rep of flaky focusing on Canon. I think it was the bodies, not the lenses. I've had the 30 1.4, also fantastic lens for cheap (crop though), and plan on replacing my 50 1.8G with the Sigma 50 1.4. Also 2nd the 70-200 VRII rec - fantastic lens worth the rather high price. Definitely a step up from my Canon 70-200 2.8. I think I'd be very happy with maybe 4 lenses if I had to make do - UWA zoom - I have 14-24 but others cheaper and lighter would work Normal zoom - 24-70 2.8 or 24-120 or maybe the new 24-85vr 70-200 vrII Sigma 85 Ok maybe 5 - need a macro Ok maybe 6 - gawd I'd miss the 200/2 :-) Feb 03, 2013 at 05:06 PM

I had a 1DmkII & 50d Plus 24-105L, 100-400L, 70-200 F4L, and 85mm 1.8. I picked up a D7000 +kit, but I chose Nikkor manual lenses. For a total of just over $2000 I got the following lenses in excellent condition, 16mm 3.5 K AI'd fisheye 24mm 2.8 AIS 35mm 1.4 AIS 50mm 1.4 K AI'd 55mm 2.8 AIS micro 85mm 1.4 AIS 105mm 2.5 P 135mm 2.8 AI 180mm 2.8 AI 300mm edif 4.5 AIS An amazing kit for less than I paid for the 24-105L and 100-400L together Just a thought but to me it was definitely worth it and I love the primes - so sharp!
