Does posting images for comment/critique require an "Upload & Sell Membership"?

I rarely sell gear, is that the primary benefit of this membership?

Not necessary. Use Flickr/ImageShack/Photobucket etc. to 'host' your pics.
Most of us subscribe to support this great site. Used to be $45 a yr before
there was a B&S "fee" and now Upload is included...more for less!
