p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Buying the GH3. Ultrawide lens and variable ND filter?

I'm buying the GH3. Having used APS-C for forever, I need some lens recommendations, primarily for travel, so it needs to be light and minimal.

I'm thinking about:

Ultrawide - but I need one that can take a variable ND filter. How can this be accomplished with m4/3?

Superzoom - Panasonic 14-140mm f/4.0-5.8 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. Lumix G Vario HD

Prime - Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G- Series Pancake Lens (46mm)

Any input?

Could always go for the 14 f 2.5, its wickedly small and very inexpensive or perhaps the Oly 12/2 if you are wanting a prime. Personally, the 14+25 is proving to be a great walk around setup for me, with a dash of 45 mixed in.
I am not a fan of zooms, so I have no suggestions there. The 14-45 OIS is well rated.

Hey There,

If you're traveling light, toss the prime if you can cover it with a zoom, saves space and weight for a (mostly) small difference (unless low light prime is absolutely critical)

I will eventually get a zoom, but for now 12-35 suits my purpose quite well. If I were to get a zoom, the 14-140 would be it.

I just picked up the 12-35 panasnoic zoom, along with a Genustech vari-nd filter and really like the combo, specifically this: Filter

I travel by bike, going on tour for weeks-months on end, and am really excited about how light this kit allows me to go. (previously I lugged my 7d, 70-200 F2.8 IS II, and 24-70 along.... HEAVY)

Hope this helps,

- G

For a good ultra wide zoom you should buy the Panasonic 7-14mm. But... it doesn't take filters. The next offer is from Olympus; they have a small and nice 9-18mm zoom. It's collapsible and a decent performer, takes filters and doesn't occupy a lot of space in your bag. Check for reviews.

If filters and ultra wide are what you need, then the Oly 9-18 is your answer, unless a 24mm equivalent is OK (15mm on APS-C), in which case, the Olympus 12mm is a great lens. The Panny 14mm is a good and VERY small lens, but it's not an ultra wide...it's got the same FOV as an 18mm lens on APS-C (28mm on full frame).
