I started with a 7D and 70-200 and had great fun with this combo (mainly nature shots). I picked up a 5D Mk iii with 24-105 and at the same time a 400 f5.6. Since than, the 70-200 sits on the sidelines most of the time.

So the question is: What do you use your 70-200 for? I need to be inspired.

Nothing really. I bought the 2.8 IS II a year or so ago (when they were popularly priced) to replace my original 2001 70-200/2.8 IS. After one week in the field, I did not find enough improvement over the 70-200/4 IS to make hauling it around worthwhile. I suppose the 2.8 IS II will be useful if I ever shoot at f/5 or wider again.

I use the 70-200 range frequently for just about everything, inlcuding pan-stitch landscapes.

Longer shots than I can get with the 24-105

If you're in to long telephoto shots then the 70-200 is probably not the right lens in your bag.

It's not often I need to go over 200mm.

That's just the problem....the 400 seams to be on my 7D all the time and the 70-200 sits in the bag

Football on dimly lit fields. Gyms with enough light to go as narrow as 2.8 @ ISO 3200 (not a lot of them around here). Baseball and softball as I can go from batter to base runner with a twist of the FL ring. Landscape. Wildlife. Occasional environmental portrait. Even macro. Excellent tool. Bought version II to replace an ancient non-IS version. Found the latest version to acquire focus faster (in lower light). Sharpness really about equal. Frankly with 24-70 and a 70-200 both f/2.8, I can handle about everything required for newspaper work. Both are also valuable for landscape. If I can only walk about with 2 lenses the above would be the choice.

I have the same problem with the 70-200 F/4 IS - I usually want to go longer (the 100-400 usually does the trick) or wider.

Since you have both the 70-200 mkII and 400/5.6:

Have you tried comparing (Optically, AF Speed) the 70-200 + TC2 and the 400/5.6 ?

If comparable the IS on the 70-200 might be handy...

Landscapes, particularly sunsets; not all of the sky always looks good enough to include. At 200, I don't have to crop half the pixels away.

And, also in particular, the Olympic mountains of WA state are about 13 miles away - across water. Foot zooming is kind of wet (to say nothing of the depth of the Juan da Fuca Strait).

Indoor swim meets, kids, dogs, "intimate" landscapes (that is, small sections of the view, not nudes...

)...

I often stick an extension tube in my pocket and carry the 70-200 (or 80-200) on walks in the woods or down the road; the 2.8 aperture isolates subjects and the extension tube gets me closer to bugs, flowers, and other tiny things...

On bright sunny days, I might grab the 70-300 instead, but for shade or overcast, it's the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II...

I just got back from the camera store trying to satisfy an itch for something new. Decided to just hold a 70-200f2.8 is ii. That alone gave me tennis elbow so I'm happy with the f4 IS once again. I did get some macro tubes so off to play with those.

Very rare that I don't have my 70-200 on my 1DX. Incredibly versatile zoom for events. Combined with a 1.4x TC it can do fairly well at field sports as well.
