p.1 #1 · Did I just make a mistake?

Back in 2008 I first learned about the 200mm Medical Nikkor and always wanted one. Well today I went ahead and bought one on eBay. I thought I had researched everything but now I am unsure.

Will this even work with my D3? I didn't even think about checking to see if it was AI/AIS or what not. Also I remember someone here owning it as well but can't remember if the used a DSLR and can't find the thread.

As I remember when I used one of these back in the days with the F2a body, and now in relation to the D3. You will need to set it up as a one of your manual lens choices inside the D3's menu.

I hope you got all the magnifying pieces, cords and bulbs..

Oh yeah. Made sure of that. I have all 6 magnifying lenses, AC unit, sync cord, replacement bulbs, manual, brush and some hotshoe cover thing.

So I actually have to plug this lens in order to use the ring flash?

As I remember. There is a 'power supply' as pictured on the top of this pile.

That's all I remember.

I don't think there was a 'strobe' used in here.. As I recall it was just 6 or 8 bright incandescent lights surrounding the lens. You may have been more likely to have success the one of the Nikkor Macro lenses, and a ring flash for the end of it. I shouldn't say anymore without knowing for sure.

Maybe it was a combo strobe/modelling light deal. I'm too old to remember.

Exactly the one I bought. Hope to get it Saturday but will probably come Monday.

Really hoping everything works out fine. I sold off my 105mm VR awhile ago and was going to rebuy it until I saw this looking pretty.

So you have no memory of how to use it? Information on using this lens is thin and I've been messaging people on Flickr but no replies yet.

I know it's manual everything.

And when I used it for diamonds and mountings. I used a meter for exposures.

I think it was 1 percent spot reflective and overall spot on the item evaluated. it was film and we didn't have room for chimping. The lens moves in/out for focus and delivers nice images period.

I don't know what you had in mind with this acquisition. I just hope it works out for you.

My dentist raves about this lense, if anybody cares.

Perhaps you've seen this, but it gives some information about the lens and a link to another site with more information. Bjorn Rorslett is not a big fan, though he uses the lens. I've no idea whether anything in the mount of this old lens would prove problematic for a DSLR camera. Have fun and be careful.

I'm jealous, it would be a blast to mess around with one of those

What a cool lens. I've read about it before - I don't think you could have possibly made a mistake buying such an interesting piece of kit. Enjoy!

If I remember right, I believe Guy (Gugs) bought one of these and used it on his D3. Yup. here's his thread.

So it came in this morning and I've been playing with it off and on. I need to take more pictures of everything. It's awesome to say the least!

Problem is it's dusty from sitting in a pawn shop for so long. Or it might be my sensor, which will be solved once my VisibleDust swabs come in.

Anyways here are some of the pictures I took, excuse the subjects I was trying to find things around me. I don't have the battery pack so I am tethered to an AC outlet

Wow, mind posting some 100% crops? Looks really great even for test shots.

What are the burnt black stick images of? And that round red ball?

I'll see if I can do 100% crops when I get home but I think you should be able to see them yourself by going on my Flickr.

As for the burnt black stick images, those are candle wicks and the round red ball is a cookie crumb on carpet.

I did manage to clean my sensor as I had some VisibleDust Swabs left over I forgot about. Also if you stack all the lenses together it still works pretty well:

Your Flickr is more than enough! Thank you and thanks for revealing what the candle wick and cookie crumb were

...wow!

Safe to say you haven't made a mistake. These are some seriously impressive shots of rather mundane subjects

Very cool - I'd say mistake only if you become completely obsessed.

It's a risk, I'm already mildly obsessed with what you've done so far...

Until I get the DC Unit, I'll have to be creative.

Yeah, keep trying to think of new things to take pictures of. Really excites my creative juices. Can't wait until I can afford to get and hopefully find the DC Unit for when summer comes around.
