An interesting series and I like your question as this sort of thing rarley gets put up for discussion. All are great images in their own right and these are just my opinions for what they are worth and I'm no expert but at the end of the day, it is your image and you have to look at it. The interesting thing is everybody's opinions are different and yet none are wrong and none are right.

1-4: a great shot all round

1 = is a good balance and very natural looking
2 = is just a little more blown in the whites and less natural looking as I think at that time of day the light would be more yellow rather than the slight blue that is evident in the image. In isoltion it is good, but when compared to the others is not as good, IMO.
3 = is also a good balance and natural looking but when compared to 1 it is just not quite as good, IMO.
4 = is also a good balance, probably the best out of the bunch.

All are excellent in isolation, but when given a comparison, I pick number 4, although it's a toss up between it and number 1.

5-7: a lovely shot all round

5 = Probably a bit too yellow for me
6 = a tad better, but atill a tad too yellow for me
7 = a better colour balance, but possibly still a bit too accurate

I pick 7 as it is more natural, but I would probably like it somewhere between 6 & 7.

8-11: again, in isolation they are all great but when given a comparison...

8 = the wing on the left (birds right) is a little less detailed than the other shots, body a little more blown
9 = much better feather detail under the left wing (birds right) but the body is too contrasty and looks a little unnatural
10 = very good balance of left wing detail and body detail and exposure, best WB reflecting the slight yellow tinge of afternoon light
11 = very good balance of left wing detail and body detail and exposure, but the WB is more neutral not really reflecting the afternoon/morning light.

For me it is number 10.

The silhouette is great, love the orange water! Glad you didn't do a 3 way post process on that one and ask us for opinions!

Lance - thanks for your comments.

Always fun to see how we all see things differently.

Just want to make sure you know - - in none of these photos are the highlight blown.

Technically, probably not, and I see this with my images, the post process software says that it isn't blown, but it looks blown on screen.

They were all shot in light Golden Light & actually should reflect that to a certain degree.

I agree! that's part of the appeal of "Golden Light".

Thanks

Lil

Lance - you're right - the whites may look blown, but that can easily have to do with a mis-calibrated monitor as well. Mine passes the calibration criteria with flying colors.

Thanks Lil. Quick ?, I've been using the gray point instead of finding the black and white point. Do you think it's any different?

Lil,

I am using CS6. White/Black points does give a bit different result then what I was using.
I think you right, I am gonna start using white/black points. Maybe it's more accurate if I use all three points?? ...

This is the tutorial I used for the gray point.

I'll check it out Quang,

white & black points tell the software what's the darkest & lightest in the frame. After all - - the camera & software see it all in grays.... So we need to tell them

Lil:

To elaborate on my original post.....First, the threes...I was joking. Sorry you did not pick up on that. Second, I usually don't like to critique. If most is right about a particular shot, it is hard for me to tell you what is best when the variations are slight. IMO, the subtleties of PP most of the time is the authors preference.

I would choose #1, 7 and 9 of your variations. Your silhouette is excellent.

Thanks Ted,

Jokes can be hard to "get" online. Like I wrote in the PM - I think I now have a total of 3 people in the forum I hide from. I don't get them so better not read what they write....

This wasn't much for critique - - more a discussion/communication/thinking out loud thing

Thanks for your picks & I so appreciate you like the silhouette
