I think your best bet would be a new Canon EOS Rebel T4i.

Throw on a wide angle zoom and you will have better image quality and functionality than any compact.

Plus, you can use it as an emergency wedding backup if one of your main rigs dies.

$648 right now on Amazon.

Seems like a home run.

Dang, at that price I might even buy one

The Fuji cameras are definitely attractive. With a sub 2k budget, I'd probably go with an x100s. With a sub k budget, an x20. If you're willing to risk the AF issues and are on a budget but want a larger sensor than in the x20, there's always the x100.

I know the RX1 is amazing, but for that price, sheesh...include a viewfinder!

Or a standalone battery charger, or a lens hood.

Doug...thanks for the info! The specs on the RX100 are definitely misleading then...on paper it souds like it shoots at ISO 6400. If it falls apart after ISO 400 then it's definitely not the camera for me.

Mark...I don't own any consumer lenses so if I picked up a Rebel T4i, I'd have to bring a few L-lenses with me....something I'm trying to avoid.

It sounds like the Fuji X100s may offer the best size to image quality ratio for a vacation camera.

Rebel T4i with 18-55 image stabilized lens $649 on Amazon

Rebel T4i with 18-135 image stabilized lens $859 on Amazon

No L lenses required

Unless the compact form factor is your #1 concern why would you spend more on an X100 with a fixed 35mm (equivalent) lens?

And as I said the T4i gives you a wedding backup as well as a vacation camera.

Good luck whichever direction you decide to go

I was looking at a Fuji x10 tje other day. It does have a hotshoe for a flash and the lens can be zoomed by using the ring around the lens. I think that feels a bit closer to an slr.

if anyone is intersted, i actually have an x10 for sale - while i really liked it, and am willing to keep it (not actively selling in other words) the omd replaced what i was using it for.

There's an image thread dedicated to the RX100 in the Alt Forum here https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1139172

I've never used one but it looks pretty impressive to me. I love my OM-D but if you don't want to deal with lenses I'd probably grab the RX100.

I'm using an EOS M and a Sony TX20 now for mobile. If I need some L lenses, I bring them, if I need to go underwater, I take the TX20 and for casual shooting, the EOS M with 22mm pancake. The image quality is pretty decent and it's versatile so I can even use flashes, mics, whatever I've amassed with my Canon gear.

All the cameras these days shoot at 6400. Does not mean it looks good. Really 400 is the limit and 800 is pushing it. The x10 is great and will shoot up to 1600 reliably. The x100 will go to 3200 no prob.

Wait a few weeks for the x20 or x100s.

Take a look at the rx100. It is not stellar in the dark but for a pocket cam it is amazing.

i used my omd at 6400 in italy inside all the dark museums and churches. while the photos are a bit grainy at that iso - they are sooo usable. if anyone is interested in looking at the gazillion pictures i took with the omd - just ask. i'm more than happy to share - haha.

I'd actually love to see some examples at 6400. I've been considering the OM-D for some time now.

I bought the rx100 because of the size and the picture quality. I really wanted something that would fit in my pocket yet let me play when I wanted. It fits the specs well. Having the active ring on the front was a little weird at first but quickly became easy to use. Overall I think about the best camera for the features, build, and picture quality especially in the compact camera size range with a sensor just slightly smaller than the G1X.

You can also get a good idea from DxO scores of ISO performance. For example, here's the comparison between the OM-D and the D700.

http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon_D700-vs-Olympus-E-M5

The 1.5 stop difference suggests an image at 1600 with the OM-D should resemble a D700 image taken at 1600+1600+800 ISO, or ISO 4000.

Lew -- I had the same debate last year and after going 'round and 'round in circles, I decided that nothing would be at the quality level of 5D2+L glass, so why bother trying to find a compromise. I ultimately just picked the Canon S100 because it was small and not plasticky.

I went to Costa Rica with it and proceeded to take a ton of blurry, grainy, poorly timed, and questionably composed photos like all the other tourists. It was liberating and awesome!

But you're much more of a gear head than I am, so you should totally buy some new toys to play with on the cruise. Mwahaa. Oh! You should buy Carmela a vacation camera too, but a different one from yours, so then you can try two different ones!
