Hi,
I saw this page comparing 180 AFD F2.8 with 70-200 F2.8 VR...
If you look at the crops shown, the prime is pathetically soft at 2.8, even in the center...
My question is, does it match your experience in the field?
The crops show that 180 is sharper than 70-200 at F8...if you look at the photozone review of the prime, it shows that there's not much difference between 2.8 and 5.5....F5.6 being the sharpest aperture...and F8 in fact goes down a bit.
regards,
anurag

I owned the 180 and 80-200 2.8D at the same time. I wouldn't say the 180 was "pathetically" soft at 2.8, but my zoom was slightly sharper at the same FL. Stopped down to f/4 the 180 was sharper, then by f/5.6, sharpness was about equal. The 180 is a nice little lens though, light, compact, pretty sharp, built in hood, low price... Definitely worth trying, if you find one at a good price. I now own the 70-200vr. While I didn't test it against the 180, it's optical performance is pretty close to the 80-200, so the comparison should be pretty similar.

If you're talking about the VR1, then the 180 is sharper wide open (based on the copy I've owned of the 180 2.8 and 70-200 VR1). The 70-200 VRII is another story. It is sharper than my 180 2.8 even in the center, and has less CA. Compared to the VRII, the 180 2.8's only advantage is that it's smaller.

+1 My experience as well.
On my D700 the 180/2.8AF was fine, but on my D800 it ran out of sharpness and could not stand up to my 70-200AFS VRII. It would sharpen up nicely in the center upon stopping down, but the outer 1/3 was lagging much behind - same as shown in the photozone.de tests/measurements.

Though a fine lens, I did not use it that much with the D800 and has now found a new home.

I had a couple of 180mm F2.8AFD lenses. Compact, nice. F2.8 was never quite as sharp as F4.
