p.1 #1 · Day Bag for 5D3, 24-70 2, 70-200 2 + Accessories

I am looking for a good day bag to hold my 5D3 and a couple of lenses (24-70 II, 70-200 II and or some primes). Maybe a flash too. I want something fairly compact that is provides easy access to the gear. I have two large backpacks now and I tend to leave them home because they are too bulky and they are not so easy to get into. I was originally looking for a small backpack but have since gravitated towards a messenger bag, as this seems to be best config for my needs. I really like the Tenba Large Messenger (not much bigger than the small) and the Crumpler 6 or 7 Million Dollar Home. Any thoughts or recommendations. I really want to keep size as one of the key a priorities. Its so easy to go big and that defeats my objective. Thanks, Dave.

Lenses mounted? If so, which one(s)? This will make a big difference...

For example, I picked up a used tamrac velocity 7 for super cheap, I did not know if I would like the sling style of it, but the price was too good to not buy it. Turns out I love the bag, but it is too small for a 70-200. So I picked up a velocity 8x used, and it fits a mounted 70-200 plus 2 smaller lenses and a 580 flash. The catch with this setup is I have to mount the 70-200, or go with no lens mounted.

Now, I am the first to admit I am a bag whore; I have way more bags than I have stuff to put in them. But I try to carry only what I need, and in the smallest package I can fit it into. Hopefully my ramblings can help you figure out your situation. Good luck!

Paul

Paul, Good question. I have pretty much resolved myself to the fact that I would have to go unmounted with the 70-200 to keep things small enough. I will check out the Velocity 8X. I'm not married to any particular type of bag.

1Kind, I can't remember if I looked at the Think Tank. I will check it out.

Thanks!

1Kind, The ThinkTank 20 might be the ticket. I like the fact that its tall enough to have the 70-200 attached to the body.

If you go unmounted, think tank urban disguise 30 (or is it 35?) works. I have the same kit and it fits fine. Very compact, discreet, and you know it's made to last.

Think tank for sure. Retrospective, urban disguise, sling, or anything that fits. They are all optimize for shooting, just depends on your style.

I have a ThinkTank Retrospective 10. I have a 5D3, 24-70, 580ex ii flash, charger, spare batteries, lens caps, etc. All fits. I can probably fit a 70-200 but it would definitely start getting cramped.

I also have a Sling-O-Matic and Streetwalker that I still have to review.

I tripped across the Lowepro, Pro Messenger 180 AW. Looks like a really nice bag. Very similar to the ThinkTank 20.

Think Tank Retrospective, 20 if you want to carry the 70-200 mounted, 10 if you don't need it mounted. Great quality bags.

My preference for that combination of gear is the Billingham 207 as it is storm-proof, small, and easy to work out of.

If I need the 70-200 mounted, then I use either the Retro-20 or Urban Disguise 35.

I use a TT UD30 and it fits my Nikon D700 gripped with 70-200 attached as well as my 24-70 and SB900 with no problem. The hood has to be reversed on the 70-200 if its mounted. Not sure if the Canon version is longer.

The Tamrac Velocity 9x can handle the 70-200 mounted or unmounted. It's been my main walk-around bag for several years now.

p.1 #15 · Day Bag for 5D3, 24-70 2, 70-200 2 + Accessories

Well, I was pretty much down to the TT Retrospective and the Lowepro Pro Messenger 180. On Saturday I was in Frys Electronics and tripped across messenger bag by Voyager, a manufacturer I had never heard of. I really liked the bag, but it was a little large. I had to keep reminding myself that the objective was to have a reasonably sized bag that doesn't get left behind because its too big. I did a little research on Voyager and found a smaller version of the same bag. I ordered an Up-Rise 33 from Amazon on Sat for just over $100. It arrived yesterday (how do they do that?). This bag is awesome! Its 13 x 11 x 4, so its not tiny, but its not a bag of cement either. And, it's expandable so you can get another two inches of depth by unzipping the two halves of the bag. Extremely well made, well padded, removable camera gear insert, rain cover, plenty of storage for a lenses, small laptop/tablet, batteries, filters, charger, cards, and other accessories. It is tall enough that it carries my 5d3 with a 70-200 f/2.8 attached. Based on my search, its one of the only bags in this class that will handle this lens on camera. Here are the additional items I have in the bag: 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 24-70 f/2.8, 580 EX, MacBook Air (13"), filters, memory cards, charger, extra battery, and misc accessories. Things are comfortably snug (as in well protected) but not overly tight. One of my favorite features is the access zipper on the top of the bag. It allows you to get to your gear without opening the flap every time. The bag is made of ballistic nylon with sturdy seams and has a well padded shoulder strap. If I have one gripe it's that with the sides expanded the balance of the bag is a little off when using the handle. This turned into a bit of a review but I wanted to share my enthusiasm because I spent many hours looking for the right bag and I couldn't be happier with this one.

I was looking for a smaller sized messenger. I'm sure there are some others that meet the need. I was just pretty happy with the Vanguard and thought I would share my eval. Thanks.
