p.1 #1 · Canon 24-105 vs 18-135 STM: AF Speed

Has anyone had a chance to compare these two lenses side by side? I'm aware of all of the differences like constant f4, build quality, etc. I'm just curious how they compare in terms of AF speed and accuracy.

Not used an STM but
From what I can gather the STM drives work better for video. I don't think they are as quick but are designed to hunt less when in live view/hybrid live view AF.

I have however used the 24-105L . And can say that on any body I've used it on its plenty fast and was plenty accurate.

p.1 #3 · Canon 24-105 vs 18-135 STM: AF Speed

The 18-135 STM on a 60D on does not seem nearly as fast as the USM in my EF-S 15-85mm IS USM and 7D. I didn't directly compare it to my 5D2/24-105L but my gut feeling is the 15-85 is slightly faster focusing than the 24-105. I ran the 18-135 from close focus to infinity several times and it took a second or slightly longer. In this same extreme situation, the 15-85 and 24-105 are so fast focus appears almost instant. For focus tweaks of a few feet at mid distances it is hard to tell a difference.

The 18-135 is among the ugliest lenses I have seen. Even uglier than the 15-85! Looks just like a goth travel mug with rubber grips for car use.
