You were absolutely correct on the concept relating crop factor to shutter speed, I just wanted to reiterate that there is nothing sacred about the "rule of thumb" suggesting that 1/focal length.

Take care,

I can't help feeling that even now you still didn't read the second part of my post where I discuss the 1/FL rule.

If you ask a rational economic question like this, it should start with the question, how much is a good photo worth to you? For a professional that's not hard to answer, since you are in the know of your rates to the client. In that case every extra keeper that you can sell given by the use of IS is part in the equation:

extra keepers * $ rate per photo = > $500 = ROI

In case your photography is just a hobby the equations will be:

(IS * EOSfun) - 500$ + permission of the wife > 0 = OK
if (IS * EOSfun) - 500$ + permission of the wife < 0 = bad spent money
if (IS * EOSfun) - 500$ - permission of the wife > 0 = lots of EOSfun, but troubles at home

My wife is happy if I am happy.
