I used to own a 28-135mm, not a bad lens but you can't really compare the IQ to the 24-105. For me, I can definitely tell the difference. If I were you though, I'd take the 24-70mm mk1...you can handle the weight . I don't own a mk1 so I don't really know but I've recently got the mk2 and it is a whole level above the 24-105 so I think the mk1 is also. I want to squeeze every bit of IQ out of my equipment so for me, I don't mind lugging tons of stuff with me everywhere, even on vacation

I think it is sharp enough. I used it for a long time (some pics with that lens below) but as I say having to reset your exposure every time you zoom is a pain.

Note the bowing when shooting flat in too.

Chris -- I'm finding LR4 to really change the complexion of this 28-135. The lens Profile does great at reducing the distortion, and the Color setting eliminates CA. The version I have now must be more recent, with better lens coatings, because it has far better contrast than I remember. Plus better central sharpness. And the lens is moderately flare-resistant (see second photo, light between leaves).

I'm very surprised to find myself liking this lens! It is lightweight and feels well balanced on the 5D2 with grip.

It has no lens creep, unless pointed straight down. 135mm is a pretty impressive close-up lens.

I'm not saying it is L quality, but for a all-purpose knock-around on full frame, it's doing good so far.

Here's a shot from yesterday that I cross-posted in the "Canon Winter" thread (sorry). It is a three shot panorama (heavy overlap) with a 5D2 at 28mm, 1/125, f/7.1, ISO 200, processed in LR4 and PSE 10.

Here's another from yesterday, just before the sun went down. Same camera, 135mm, 1/60, f/7.1, ISO 400, LR4, slight crop. IS is a really bonus for this type of shot!

Great pics with the 28-135. I just can't believe the value you get with this lens. Sharpness is wonderful and you can't beat the price. Like mentioned in manual you have to get a new meter reading when you zoom and the aperture changes, but I have found that not to be an issue so far. I still can't believe i paid 289 dollars for a refurbished from B&H and I believe completely that it is brand spanking new out of a kit. IS is an older version, but still works fine and helps cover the slower speed, and with a FF you can use higher iso and that as well helps you to keep your shutter speed up. so I can't imagine a better value for $289 bucks. I am thinking of buying another before B&H runs out of the refurbished.

Well, my first one (bought new from B&H in the late 90s) wasn't so great when I really started to look at it critically. That revelation was a strong impulse that led to the (expensive) IQ renaissance I've been undergoing these past 4 or 5 years. This second sample is much better, and one of those rare finds for $170 that actually exceeds expectations.

I was getting lens creep when i pointed the lens right down but dropped it in for calibration and they tightened up the barrel, completely fixed it.

Good as the recent 28-135 IS has been for me, it seems I have a new friend in the 24-105L IS (purchased here on the B&S forum).

The 28-135 eased my way into the 24-105, and now I'll have to decide what to do with it.

But the last couple days playing with the 24-105, dialing in the MA for several bodies, has been interesting and revealing.

Here are some shots from today's beautiful spring weather here in Southern California.

On reading this again, I'm tempted to tell you to buy Tamron's 28-75/2.8. It's pretty bad in the borders at wide apertures, but cleans up nicely by f/8 and has size and weight suited to hiking.

But then, if you were an ultralight hiker, you probably wouldn't be taking a full-frame body up the mountain when a Sony NEX-style camera would drop your kit weight by 3 lbs or better. The 24-105/4L is such a versatile lens. If you're not taking an ultrawide, I wouldn't give up 24mm or the ability handhold down to 1/5 with IS. It's worth the slight weight increase.

I haven't used these lenses since my 10d, but my recollection is that the 28-105 and 28-135 IS really like being stopped down. At about f8 (surprise!) they can be really good performers, at wider apertures the 24-105/4 L is clearly superior.

If you don't need f2.8, don't need L class glass or IS, then I'd recommend the older EF 24-85 f3.5-4.5 USM zoom. I've used mine for over ten years, for both film and digital and really like it's ultra light weight.

Ken's updated review includes images and info regarding lens profiles used in the 6D and 5D3
http://kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/24-85mm.htm

It's not an L, but is IMHO one of Canon's lost gems. There is some distortion and other issues, but both LR and; I've heard/read, the newer 6D and 5D3 can correct for these via lens profiles. Usually around $300 used it's a nice bit of kit with decent IQ. YMMV, Ken's review was based on using my 24-85, and until I get a FF body, test it, it won't be replaced by an L.

I find the 24-105 barely wide enough (sometimes not) given my shooting style. I thinking giving up another 4mm would be a detriment. I am also not a fan of variable aperture or 5.6 at short focal lengths.
My vote is for the 24-105.
I did have the 17-85 for a while and, at least focal length wise, it was pretty good.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Jim (gunzorro), without a doubt, your 24-105L knocks the socks off your 28-135. No contest.
My 28-105 is an outstanding lens for <$150, but I do plan on getting a 24-105L at some point.
I don't think I've ever seen a single shot from the 28-135 on a fairly modern FF DSLR that impressed me, or made me feel the lens was worth the generally $250-$350 price tag. Soft, soft, soft.

ISO1600 -- Thanks for the positive response.

I have to agree that the 24-105L is better than the 28-135 IS. But, by how much, and in what situations? There certainly seems a wider range of sample variation in the 28-135. I have taken some strong pictures with the 28-135, so can't completely write it off just yet (maybe will in time, after more A-B comparisons).

Here are a few from the 28-135 (sorry again -- no 6D on hand). First shot of leaves is on 8MP 1D Mark II (53mm @ f/11), second is on 10MP 1D Mark III (100mm @ f/8). The last one with detail is shot on 21MP 1Ds Mark III (135mm @ f/7.1). The long end is supposedly the weakest, but this sample is fine.

This is a better copy than my original, yet it only cost $170. Hard to get rid of at that price!

I'll agree with StillFingerz re: the 24-85: I quite like mine, even though it's not the best in the upper part of the range, it's very handy and pretty sharp stopped down. I carry it with my 1D Mark II N most of the time. I'm not sure how well it's going to work on an FF camera though, as I've never owned one.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I bought a 28-135 IS on the B/S board for about $200, figuring that at that price I had little to lose by giving it a go. While I haven't tested it fully against the 24-70, or my primes, I have been pleased so far with the image quality. The only IQ issue for me is heavy CA at the edges of the full frame, but LR4 cleans this up nicely.

The downside of the lens for me is the cheap-feeling build quality, particularly the tendency of the lens to extend when tilted downward. There is just something nice about the precision feel of an L zoom on a full-size (e.g. 7D/6D) body that is very nice, regardless of whether it actually takes better pictures. The 17-40 is an example of this - it feels smooth and well-machined, even though it is not that heavy. The 28-135...not so much.

So I will see...I do like the 28-135 light weight, and the IQ is fine. But I'm not sure I'll really be happy with the feel of it. I guess L glass is beginning to spoil me...

I'm willing to compromise "the feel" for acceptable quality. Ha-ha!

But I know what you mean about the pleasure of close tolerances and smooth functioning.

I just considered the 28-135 might be a good choice for its light weight and size, balancing its extensive focal range. I could do with this same type lens going to 24mm, especially on a 1D APS-H sensor (36mm equiv). Still, for the price, it's a keeper for now!

Here's the my current mid-range zoom line-up.

Size-wise, it's easy to see why the 28-135 is appealing -- it's the smallest and lightest of the lot. But it is easy to understand that it encompasses some compromises, including being the weakest of the four in IQ and build quality. Then again, it is the only one that is not an "L".

I previously owned the EF 24-85 and the EF 28-200 USM. The 24-85 was the weakest of all these lenses, and I kept in only about two weeks before selling it off. The 28-100 (second model -- USM version) was a decent lens along the lines 28-135 IQ, but was superseded by the 28-300L with IS. Otherwise, the 28-200 was a pretty fair lens with an impressive super-zoom range.

You can probably see why I bought the 24-105 recently. I wanted a lens smaller and lighter than the 28-300, but with IS and a broad focal range.

To answer the OP's question: Get the 24-105L IS to get the most out of your 6D. You'll be very happy with the images and range.

Here's the line-up: 24-70L IS, 24-105L, 28-135 IS, 28-300L IS.

For techies: photos taken with 1D3, 100L IS, 580II, ISO 200, f/4.
