p.1 #1 · Table Rock (West Virginia)

I've been having trouble keeping up with processing photos from last fall, and with this forum, but I finally completed a set from Table Rock, an out-of-the way ledge in the heart of West Virginia's Allegheny mountains. We weather was drizzly and uniformly overcast, so the sky sucked; I did my best to minimize it. On the other handle, the soft lighting was conducive to bringing out the color of the wet leaves. Here a selection; a few more are in this gallery.

These are super good for me. I was in WV the fall of 2011, great color but lots of rainy/drizzly weather. Be happy with a grey sky, if that's the worst of it.

Thanks, Stan. Yeah, a bad day in the West Virginia highlands is still pretty damn good!

Those are some really nice shots. Did you get any snow later? I was over at Bear Rocks that afternoon (Oct 8th) and it was snowing.

Kevin, thanks. Funny you should mention the snow -- in #3 you can see the first wave of snow coming over the ridge in the distance. About 10 minutes later it was snowing at that location, and snowed off and on at that elevation for the rest of the day. I wish I had gone to Bear Rocks; I saw Joe Rossbach later and he said it was great. Instead I stayed on Canaan Mountain and looked for good snow scenes, but didn't really find much. Later I went to Shays Run and Lindy Point, but the snow hadn't stuck at those lower elevations. So no, I didn't put the early snow to good use that time. Oh well.

Dave,

It's a small world. I was set up at Bear Rocks waiting for the snow to break when Joe and a couple of his students drove up. Mostly grey skies as well but did get a very brief period of sun peeping through. Not to hijack your thread, but here is one shot from the same day. Once again, really nice shots from you; very sharp.

Kevin, yeah you are making me envious! Nice shot, wish I had headed that direction. I had that same slight skimming light on the clouds at sunset at Lindy Point, but spent too much time at Shays Run and got to Lindy too late for the best of it. Here's what I got (no snow at that elevation, sadly.)

That's very nice with the clouds in the canyon. Amazing how different the weather can be between two fairly close locations.
