Does anyone out there think that Nikon will ever release a D400. I suppose the boat has sailed on that one with the introduction of the D7000 and D600. Just interested.

I was thinking about this last night. Maybe the D400 will be a pro-sized (D2Xs-style) DX body... 18 MP, with an option to shoot either 18 or 12 megapixel RAWs, 11 fps, Expeed 4, 100-25600 native ISO, 51-pts, CF+SD, full magnesium.

While we're dreaming, they should introduce it with the new 300/4 VRII AF-S, 80-400 VRII AF-S, and a new 400 f/4.

Damn you beat me to it...i was gonna post those exact specs, except that the high iso would rival the D3s...also, in my pipe dream, the intro price was $999... Lol

I think we will know by June. I too want one as not one of Nikon's current cameras really makes me happy. I would also like an updated 80-400mm VR. For awhile I was thinking a 300mm f4 VR would be great, but I've since come to realize how versatile the 80-400mm is for travel.

Yes, I think we'll see a D400. No way to know for sure, of course.

My guess: 24MP sensor from the D5200, D800 body and processors, 5fps (or 6.5fps with grip), EN-EL15 battery, CF and SD slots, $1999 MSRP.

We should title this thread "Windmills." This must be at least the 20th thread on the phantom D400. Since the D400 speculation a D7000, D800, D800e, D600, and a D4 have been released. It's madness I say...

I think they will. The D300 sold tons and tons. So why not.

It'd also be a way to get full frame users like myself to try to get another body for birding and such. ;-) Wheras we probably wouldn't be swayed by a D7100 or whatever.

I agree with all of this, which is rather sad, given that I own some very nice cameras. I still want my d300 updated to a modern sensor so I can go back to using both formats all of the time again. I'd sure like to see one appear next month, to be ready for the spring/summer sports season.

I've been wanting a 300 f/4 for a long time, but won't buy the current version. I've had an 80-400 since 2004 and love what it can do, when it works well and hate what it can't do, when it doesn't do what I want. So, I figure that I could be spending about $4k to $5k if they release a d400 that meets my specs and those 2 lenses.

Latest d400 rumor that I read was a welcome surprise, ie 10fps, excellent high ISO and around 16 to 18mp. I don't need or want high high MP noisebox. My d800 does just fine in that dept.

Actually, I'd be a buyer if they would just tweak that 16mp sensor from the d7k/d5100 for a little better high ISO and stuff it in the d800 body.

Too bad that Nikon doesn't have a custom shop, where you could order the camera with the goodies that you want. A lot of folks here might be going broke if that happened.

Just out of curiosity, Kerry, what would be gained by a D400 @ 16mp, when you have a D800 at 15+ MP for the same pixel density?

Aside from 10 fps, I guess, which I personally can't see using.

Maybe this is why Don Quixote is so popular... many of us see much of ourselves in Don Quixote. PBSs did a survey years ago of parents that watched Sesame Street with their kids. Fathers identified most strongly with "Super Grover" who was a takeoff on Superman. Super Grover always stumbled on the windowsill while flying out to save the world and ended up flat on his face.

The viewfinder is much better on the d300 than trying to use the DX thing on the d800, especially for precise placement of the AF point. IME, focus accuracy is better too.

I would also expect an improvement in high ISO performance and perhaps a touch more DR.
