Anyone have a chance to compare image quality of both lenses at 24mm?

Thanks

Yes, and the TS-E 24mm mkII :-)

http://eyvindness.zenfolio.com/p422183461/h4cc9d4e0#h4cc9d79a

and the follwing pics. Exif is intact, just put the cursor at the upper right hand corner of the picture. The lens with max lens aperture f1.4 is the 24mm f1.4 mkII, of course, and the f2.8 is the zoom, while the f3.5 is the TS-E.

Vignetting and distortion is the most striking diff between the zoom and the primes, I think. The sharpness seems close enough, to me :-)

It's not a comparison. The only common thing between these is the 24mm. They are built for different purposes and the image quality is very good on both.

I have the 24 1.4 II, 24-70 2.8 I and have also tested a 24-70 II.

To put it in short:
- do you need 1.4 - 2.8 -> get the 24 1.4
- do you need minimal distortions and low vignetting at 24 mm -> get the 24 1.4 (the prime is softer wide open, it gets very sharp at 2.8. The distortion is smaller than on the zoom and so is the vignetting at 2.8-5.6
- do you need a versatile lens -> get the 24-70
- do you shoot mostly at 2.8 or smaller apertures -> get the 24-70.

Both lenses are offering such a good image quality that this single aspect is the least important when comparing them.

If you want ultimate sharpness up to the far corners, get the 24 TS-E

I would get both. Because my 24-70 (version 1) is not very sharp at 2.8, I use more the 24 1.4. If I would get a 24-70 2.8 II, I am quite sure that it would become my most used lens on the 5d III.

Both

I will however admit that since the advent of the 1DX / 5D3 and 24-70 mk2, the 24L/II gets less use. The biggest reason to use it was low light shots, and the 1DX with the new zoom is just so damn good that the prime doesn't have to be used. So these days it's really used for the special effect of shooting at f2 or lower, and when I'm dealing with _real_ darkness (see EXIF)

The versatility of the 24-70 wins.

One is from the 24-70 II and one is from the 24 1.4 II. Guess:
A
B

of course this only compares stopped down landscape work
and f/1.4-2.5 is entirely missing of course from the zoom

if you were more of a general/landscape shooter who got the 24 1.4 II more to get superb crispness to FF edges while still wanting something more general than a T&S and only making use of f/1.4 now and then, then the 24-70 II probably makes more sense. If you use near f/1.4 quite a lot then obviously the fast prime is still the one. If you do mostly slow style landscape and architecure and are ok without AF and don't need speed then the 24 T&S II is the one. Some may have use for all three (if they have money).

Personally, I sold my 24 1.4 II and use the 24-70 II now. One day adding a 24 T&S might be nice (Bower is coming out with one soon too).

My preference is for the fixed lens, unless you need the convenience of the zoom.

For most people, wide primes are now about ultimate quality (in the corners) or low DOF or very low light work.

If you don't need those, I'd personally get the 24-70, but without knowing more it's impossible to say.
