PowerShot SX260 HS. It's the same size as an iPhone but thicker so it meets the compact requirement. It performs very nicely, especially as an all-around, do-everything p&s camera, and its 25-500mm zoom helps immensely. It's not particularly fast but the IS works very well and compensates for the slower lens. The pictures are of very good quality through ISO 800 but still look good at ISO 1600, which isn't something that could be said of p&s cameras just a few years ago. While the G and S models definitely have better lenses (I swear by my G15) they don't have anywhere close to the reach of the 260. I have one of them as well as my G15 and love using it when I want a longer focal range. Plus, they're selling for $199 at Target and BestBuy! It's really a very nice camera that has a high build quality and should stand up to lots of heavy use-it's of metal construction and feels sturdy and solid.
