p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 40D or 5D?

I've been real happy with the 24-105 f/4L that I just bought for my 40D. However, in the process of trying to sell my kit lens, I stumbled across some threads for used 5D classics.

I don't need the faster burst speed of the 40D....am mainly concerned with ISO performance and IQ. I also don't need the onboard flash.

With that in mind, for shooting landscapes, portraits, and candid family shots with my 24-105, would the 5D Classic be a better option? It's about $175 more than what my 40D is worth.

As a 40D owner having just recently bought a 5D I'd say stick with the 40D. It is just a better all round package and I am doing A3 prints from both and I can't tell the difference regarding IQ. However (as some people pick up on this sort of thing) I mainly shoot in a studio with strobes.....ISO at 160 and aperture around f5.6 on good quality lenses.

That said....I have used the 40D outside for seascape / architecture and so on...again, great A3 prints. As for the ISO advantage with the 5D....I would say one stop at the most...but you will find the AF isn't so precise so some candid shots might be missed if you like using the outer focus points a lot. people sometimes have problems with dust on the 5d sensor. Being studio based I don't...but dust was never a problem with the 40D.

As for prices.....here in the UK a s/h 5D is about double the cost of a s/h 40D...not a fair reflection on their respective merits in my opinion....

Keep the 40D for the reach of the 1.6 crop factor, ability to use EF-S lenses, and also Live View.
Buy the 5D Classic for the full frame and your 24-105 is no longer a 38.4-168. You then have a backup body and a family member can also share in the fun.

I would definitely choose the 5D. Not necessarily because it's a "better" camera body than the 40D. But simply because the 24-105L doesn't truly come to life until it's mated with a full frame body. A zoom lens that goes from a 24mm wide angle field of view to 105mm telephoto is a joy to use.

Below are two of the best, most informative reviews I've read on both bodies. Read the 5D review 1st, the 40D 2nd...the 40D review asks your question at the end.

I passed on the 5D after reading this 40D review...but still pondering the 5D; well going FF with the new 6D. I still shoot film and do like the bigger viewfinders; I've 2 EOS-3s.

Why do you think spending more would make him happier

I shot 5D1 and 40D side by side for 3 years for weddings... the 5D is a massive improvement in IQ/ISO

Blur gradation is superior with the 5d. Files are very malleable. Big bright vf. If you like taking still life with ambient light, the 5d is very enjoyable.

Exactly the same experience for me. I could always tell the difference between the 2 cameras as soon as I opened the files up in Lightroom. I still use the 5D 1alongside the 5D3. It still produces beautiful files.

If you are happy with the 40D, don't bother to change it. Why spend the money? That said, i like my 5D enormously and i think its a great camera.

I switched from 40D to 5D three years ago, or so, and while I really like having FF I do miss live view and self-cleaning. I had a stellar copy of the Tamron 17-50 non-VC which was on it most of the time, with the 85 1.8, 200 2.8, and 10-22 being the other lenses I'd often mount. It was really a great budget kit and my images weren't improved much at all by moving to the 5D -- except when shooting at iso higher than 400. In the end, I would have been better off spending my time shooting more with that kit than in reading about other options and spending time buying/selling to make the transition.

Being a satisficer can lead to more rewarding outcomes than being a maximizer. I think this is one of those cases.

IQ is about the same and still top notch in current line up from standard iso range. Operation wise is better with 40D, dof wise is better with 5D. Why not both since they are so cheap now and you can treat them as dof converter for your lenses.

Keep your 40D. Both the 40D and 5D are excellent cameras, the 5D is a little better at high ISO but there isn't a massive difference. I decided to rent a 5D to compare with my 50D as i found comments online very misleading. After much experimenting and comparing images both on-screen and print i came to the conclusion the 50D is great value for money. The 5D was a little better at high ISO but i wouldn't describe the difference as massive by any means, i decided to stick with the 50D and will upgrade only when i can see a noticeable difference.

The 5D was my first really good DSLR. And, 8 years out, those old RAWs still stand up well to my much newer cameras. However, its LCD is the worse I have used: dim, greenish and small. So the histogram is only visible in low light.

Wow

Damn Taylorman, in your other thread I jokingly suggested to fix your 24-105 "problem" you'd have to resort to getting a FF body.

Little did I know you had this thread up asking the same thing!

5D all the way! I've owned both, both great cameras, but 5D's a beautiful old beast. Badass IQ and more bokeh* with that 24-105, and a much better walk-around effective range since you were lacking on the wide end!

*Okay while technically it's less DOF at the same aperture as a crop and bokeh is only the quality of said blur, most people know what the hell I mean.
