Glad to join you guys. Cheers.

I absolutely love the D800.

I do think it is a storage hog. It would be brilliant if it could drop down to 15-20 Megapixels in raw and FX.

That said it is a great camera. I also wish the price was $2k(not for a refurb).

I am just like everyone else on this forum, or so it seems. I have a desire for a camera that does not exist

And I want to bitch about what does exist

Still a $2k D800 that can drop down in megapixels, stay in raw and in FX would be awesome.

The D600 was going to be my jump to FX but that camera just does not work for me.

I love what 36mp gets you. I can see wanting to drop it for certain reasons... but you just can't beat resolution. Downsample your images and smash everything with that native resolution.

I agree the 36 mp would be used most of the time. I just take a lot of practice, random shots that I am experimenting with so 36mp in raw becomes crazy after a while.

So why not just shoot RAW and JPG and only pull out the RAW versions of shots you're especially pleased with?

Agree it's a near perfect camera, I do wish for better viewfinder and live view for MF use but that's about it

I think mRAW and sRAW mode like Canon would be perfect. Choose when you want the resolution, and when you just want snapshots.

I find the viewfinder okay; about the same as my D3 but not as good as my old F2AS.

My D800E is is pretty much the dslr I always wanted when I moved from 6x7 film.

My biggest complaint is probably the handling which is a step back from the D700 , it is quite uncomfortable to use for any period of time for anyone with normal sized hands.

The af system could have really have done with a bigger update from the D700/D3 version too. Shooting at 1.4 is still a lottery and canon has cross points away from the central area as well as double cross points.

Well since we are nit picking about the price I wish the D800 was below $1500. The only thing I feel missing is like what mrkon said. I want lower resolutions for times when I don't need it.

So many "It's a perfect camera, except for XYZ".

Isn't that the case with most newer cameras?

And televisions, computers, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, boats...
It's life, human nature, and the world keeps turning.
It's progress. The good news is it will never end.
Features & quality will keep going up and prices will keep going down.

It is the same with every camera despite those that wax lyrical over the F3, FM2, Hassy V series and Leica M

You're talking about the D700. Such camera already exists. 12 MPs is not that different from 15 MP.

That is true but I need video, otherwise I would own a 700.

Live view improvements and S/Mraw would be awesome. The latter could be done via firmware. Live view is a problem we are stuck with until a new camera comes out.

Nuts, how could I forget the auto gain and interpolation live view issues in my list? Both really annoying.

Why couldn't the live view be fixed with firmware ? I doubt that they hard-coded the level of data loss into a cpu; it's far more likely to be done in firmware. Ditto for the gain. It fixes itself briefly when AF is started and so it must be possible at other times too. All it needs is stills mode vs a video mode selector with different attributes for each.
