Great pics. Just shows what this lens can do. I picked up a copy about 18 months ago and no regrets. Its an excellent lens and just amazingly flexible.
I've had a few 100-400's and only one really wow'ed me. But this brand new copy that I rented was probably the best I've ever used.
I will say one thing about the autofocus at f/8 with it. It acts like a 300 2.8 IS with a 2x on it if you start out being way out of focus. It hunts somewhat slowly, but then if it's anywhere near focus, it locks on and will stay locked on. Basically, if I put the lens down at my side, I tried not to bump the focus ring too much so that when I brought the camera back up to my eye, the focus was at least close so it didn't have to hunt.
And I won't be using it at the race because it's a 24 hour race where I'll be shooting a lot at night, so I have CPS loaning me a 300 II that I am looking forward to trying out. I was going to ask for the 400 2.8 but it's just too heavy to walk around with all weekend (I used one two years ago at this race).
