...in good light, that is. Specifically, no ambient whatsoever, all light coming from a speedlight.

Based on my unscientific, preliminary testing, looks like ISO800 is pretty clean. Again, I speaking of images taken in good light.

For you D1X enthusiasts out there, do you see the same?

You think 'good' light comes from a speedlight? Im not sure what your talking about, but with natural light iso800 would be extremely clean, ive seen amazing shots at iso6400, that could easily be printed large.

Should be okay.
ISO800 + Flash used properly usually yields good enough results.

Except that OP is talking about a D1x - a 10 year old DSLR.

To the OP - I haven't used the D1X but I know that both my Nikon D80 and Sony A100 were fairly noisy sensors but did well at ISO800 in good light. ISO 1600 was also fine for well-lit bright subjects.

I have used, and still own a D1x. I use it here for a variety of reasons.

and at 800 ISO, with all the post we have at our disposal now. There isn't any reason to shy away from that use. The images are just as good now, as they were when his body completely changed the face of digital imaging when it was released.

But for those who require 59 focus points, 3.2 inch chimp screens, 11 fps, 120,000+ ISO, video in-body, dual CF slots for over 300+ image capacity.. I can see where IN THEIR EYES a body as dated as this might cause some snickers.

Enjoy your images and the wonderful build of that body..
