p.1 #1 · Madagascar part XXXIII

Male panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis):

3 shot stack of a colourful reed frog:

Blue and yellow cicadellid:

A very distrusting juvenile chameleon:

Spider Assassin (Archaeidae). These have appeared a number of times in this long series, but if you haven't yet read about them you can do so here: http://pbertner.wordpress.com/spider-assassins-archaeidae/:

Crab spider (Thomisidae):

Camouflaged fulgorid hopper:

Bright eyed frog (Boophis sp.):

And just for something different an Aye Aye:
A member of the lemur family, this seldom seen, nocturnal animal typically hides in the tops of palm trees or in the higher canopy during the day. At night they may descend lower in search of tree grubs. They are able to burrow into trees thanks to a specially adapter finger that acts like a drill. Found during a night hike on Aye-Aye island, Madagascar.

Thanks for looking and commenting,
Paul

Thanks Denis! It is rarely seen, though in terms of actual numbers I'm not sure how rare it is. Certainly regionally it has been hunted to extinction, mostly because the superstitious locals see it as an ill omen. Based on appearances I can see where they might think that! Though in some areas I've heard tell of them being locally abundant. All in all though, very tough to find and get a picture of. In 4 months on the island, 3 of which were spent in the jungle and hiking each night for 4-12hrs this was more or less the only clean shot.

The colors in these pics are insane, it must be a truly beautiful country with wonderful critters. . .
I look forward to more.

Thanks kmunroe and Bruce for the kind words. It is indeed a singularly unique country that deserves to be treated much better than it has (environmentally speaking).
