p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 2013 HS Hockey Columbine at Standley Lake

I headed over to a new to me ice rink, the Ice Arena at the Promenade in Westminster on Friday night. Cool area, three ice rinks, a Dave and Busters, 24 screen theater, bowling alley, and a bunch of restaurants. Cool little area. The rink, however, was not photographer friendly. 8+ foot glass all the way around the ice, bleachers not really high enough to shoot from them and clear the glass, and dirty glass. First photo is shot over the glass before I bit the bullet and head down to ice level to shoot through the scuffed glass. I could only mount 2 strobes, where I would rather mount 3 or all 4. All of these are with the 7d, 70-200 2.8 through the glass (except the first one) and two AB800's bounced off a metal roof. Contrast is a little yucky due to the dirty scuffed glass, but this is what I got.

I will post girls hoops from Saturday tomorrow morning I hope. It looks like I have to go to the other side of Denver to shoot Olympian Missy Franklin's high school swim meet tomorrow afternoon followed up by a girls hoops game here in Arvada tomorrow evening....

Not bad for through dirty glass...

What kind of ISO would it have taken to shoot there without the strobes? I've never strobed hockey and am routinely 3200-6400 ISO to get a 1/640 shutter speed.

I think they look pretty good. I've never even seen ice hockey, much less shot it. I thought they had sections with cutouts for lenses?

Did a new venue have any inhibitions allowing you to set up strobes?

Probably a minimum 2500 ISO maybe 3200+

High school rink, no cut outs in glass.

Carl that is still awesome light 3200? Our "good" rink gets 6400ISO and 1/640 at F2.8 and has very dark wood ceilings that is boxed in, making it nearly impossible to strobe.

I think they look pretty good for the situation.
