p.1 #1 · Getting D3s dialed in for HS Hoops

Feel like I'm finally getting the feel for the Nikon D3s for prep basketball. Changed a few things for this game -- including setting the ISO manually instead of using AUTO ISO. Feel like exposures and color balance were significantly better. All were shot in Manual at f/2.8 and shutter speed of 1000. Nikon 70-200. Really LOVE this camera, and I think I'm getting close to understanding it's nuances.

sure are Rick, good looking set. think #9's a toss, but liking #1, 3, & 4...quite the size mismatch in #7...and #8, great hand on head...

Same here. Nice set. Would love to see ISO5000 1/1000th... Tonight I was lucky enough to see ISO 10000 @ 1/500 2.8...

Thank you Chris. #8 was a really treat for me too. I went wide to get clock and scoreboard in background but didn't sed the hand to the head until it his my computer screen. Kind of digging that shot.

Rick,

REALLY good action. I like these. Did you try SS of 800? Maybe you can dial down a little on the SS and still freeze and gain a little on the ISO side and not have as much noise. At that age group SS of 800 should be fine.

Hey Geoff,

I have knocked out three in a row at 12,800 and 1/640. Almost giggled when I saw the light in the gym. Thanks for taking the time to look. I always enjoy seeing your posts.

Good stuff Rick and work with D3s. Like previously mentioned .... wow on 1000ss. I'll never see that this season in any of the gyms I visit.

Very nice set, Rick. Good action and good timing, especially on the fingertip shot releases. I really like #8 and wonder how high that kid could jump if he wasn't being held down.

With auto ISO instead of letting the camera set SS or Aperture your letting it set ISO so the camera is still setting the exposure. I think you'll see much more consistent results manually setting the ISO and taking that exposure decision away from the camera, as long as the light is relatively consistent.

Rick: These look great. I especially like the richness of the colors. I agree about #8 not being up to par with the rest. I find 4 and 8 to be the strongest, with 6 very close to them and 7 something of a classic though it's not quite as crisp as some of the others. You've done a really nice job of not letting the poor attendance hurt your images, which is no small feat. Looks like you've mastered the nuance to a level of nuance.

Great stuff. Thanks for taking the time to post and I like your candid posts on how you're going about your curve.
I definitely agree that you could get the ISO down another grand at least. Maybe even to 3200.
You don't need SS of 1000 and I bet 640 would get you the stop action with little notice coming or going. Maybe a tiny bit of motion from a side to side.
Try 640 2.8 4000/3200 +0.3EV or 800 3.2 4000 0.0EV. I'd be curious to see if that works for you in this gym
Not that there is anything wrong with these, just trying to maybe creep a little closer to nailing the white balance w/o post work.
Are you setting WB or Auto WB? I can't see full EXIF on work computer.

Funny you say that Mark. I walked into the gym and was stunned to have so much light to work with -- I was almost giddy to have something south of ISO 10,000. No doubt I had a lot more wiggle room (I almost always shoot prep basketball at 1/640 or 1/800) however rather than dropping the ISO another couple notches, I tried bumping UP the shutter. As much as anything else, I am just trying to figure out what I lilke best. In retrospect, lower ISO probably would have been a better choice. Great suggestion -- and thanks for your nice comments on the action in the set.

Wendell, I can't believe what an amazing camera the D3s is. LOVED my D3, but the D3s is another huge leap ahead. We need to talk on the phone soon. It has been way too long. Hope you are well.

The player in shot number 8 is a very talented athlete. Incredible leaping ability. Think he could jump out of the gym if he tried.

Thanks for your thoughts on the AUTO ISO feature. I have really had good luck with it for football and soccer -- but I like the consistency of the shots (and white balance too) when I lock it down. This gym had a nice mix of snow covered sky-lights and nice new fluorescent bulbs -- a sports photog's dream.

Great shots...

The only time I use Auto ISO is when I'm shooting outdoors and it's not evenly lit. I use it a lot for short track racing as the overhead lights do not evenly cover the race track. Since I'm using much slower shutter speeds since I'm doing a lot of panning I've actually found most of my shots are a lower iso than I'd have dialed in manually. The beauty is that when I need a faster shutter for a wreck or something the camera will up the iso for me and I don't have to think.

Real nice set and its getting pretty obvious your comfy with your new toy. Love the action, #8 yes is the winner for me. Love the comp and sharpness you got out of it!

Definitely like the crops where you included the defenders facial expressions. Very nice balance of angles as well!
