p.1 #1 · HELP needed to enlarge an image to poster size

I'm in a bind. I shot some images for a commercial client and I totally forgot to change the Camera Raw resolution to maximum size in my Canon 40D. The resulting images are only 6.3mp @ 300ppi/16bit (3072 x 2048). They need to make poster size images for display. I only know of the Scott Kelby technique in his Photoshop CS5 book for Digital Photographers, not sure if this will do the job. I am hoping that someone out there knows of a new technique in CS5 that will help me up-size this 6.3 mp Camera Raw image. I'm not sure if this can be done in LR3 any better? If anyone can help me out in CS5 or LR3, it would be appreciated.

I didn't know the 40D was capable of 6.3 Mp raw files, I thought the next size down from full was 5 Mp. Anyhow…

It isn’t a huge jump from 6.3 to 10.1 Mp, although neither is that suitable for poster sized prints. I would first try the bi-cubic smoother algorithm in Photoshop and see how that turns out. If that doesn’t work out, you could try something like Perfect Resize (formally Genuine Fractals) – there might be a free trial version.

My personal preference, if you are going to upsize it, would be to upsize it to the final print resolution and whatever ppi is going to be used as the print input resolution.

The best solution, of course, would be to reshoot. Just out of interest, why do you ever shoot at less than full size?

Check with your lab that is going to do your printing. A good lab can let you know how to best proceed to uprez so that it will coincide well with their equipment ... or they will simply do the uprezzing via their own processes without you needing to figure it out.

You say "poster size" ... what size are you referring?
