If you have, you have experienced the intense shock waves generated by a Nitro-Methane inhaling monster producing 10,000 HP and is capable of accelerating from 0-320+ mp/h (0- 480+ km/h), in under 4 seconds….

I see photographers lined up along the wall…some on ladders…lots of expensive equipment…

How does your gear stand up to the “Extremely High Amplitude Pulses” these creations produce? … Each of those cylinders generates a pressure wave that goes right through you…and your equipment… How’s that IS working for you?

I would be scared for my little Canon 50 1.4…

Just a Thought,
Jefferson

I've shot many, it doesn't affect the gear. Gotta love how it shakes your insides though. I like to pan a lot so IS actually helps

Check out Mark Rebilas' site for lots of coverage and angles to get ideas.

As for gear damage, he also had an issue with that:

Shoot at NHRA event in Denver back in 1996, My EOS 1N with a 600 F/4L came apart as I tripped running away from flying debris coming off a funny car that crashed into a concrete barrier below me traveling at well over 200 MPH. Luckily both the lens and camera were not owned by me
I still have a nice piece of fiberglass that came off the car

"Sir excuse me, but you seem to have driven closer than my lens's MFD, can you back up a tad?"

I use to go to the Atl. race and Bristol. I wasn't into photography at the time though. Top Fuel is something everyone should experience in person. Especially a 'nitro burn' in the pits when they fire 'em up to seat the clutch.

I did many years ago. It was a horrible experience, very noisy and hot, and everything smelled bad. It's certainly not an activity that I would repeat voluntarily.

Kinda' like drinking good beer...you have to sort of develop a taste for it

I would be wearing jet engine mechanic style ear protection, never mind the camera gear!

I used to go to the races all the time. Even got to pit crew a top fuel once at an IHRA event. Will never forget that. The sound, feel, smells, and visual is something I had never experienced before, and have not to this day. Perhaps standing next to an F-14 taking off from a carrier might come close.

Used to stand 5' away from the track when I went. Best advice is to wear old clothes. long sleeves. Make sure your lens has a filter. Wrap it in a bag or something as the rubber will coat it and you cannot wipe that crap off.

In Australia a top fuel event is getting it for less than a $1.40 per litre these days.

Ha! you know what we would give here in the UK for petrol that cheap? We're paying £1.40 a litre if we're lucky.

Here in the USA we can still get gasoline for about $.87/liter (of course sold by the US gallon), and people complain, yet continue to buy 2 1/2 ton SUVs with 5 liter engines.

But top fuel dragsters...I don't need that much craziness. If I could just get a street legal electric car capable of 0-200 kph in 3 seconds, I think that would be enough! Enough to make me move someplace where I could use it!

F-14s don't take off from carriers anymore

Currently your best option is an F-18

When the shuttle was still flying, liftoff would top even a fighter jet take off.
