igmolinav Offline • • Upload & Sell: Off p.1 #1 · Refurbished Nikon D800 plus Mack 3-year warranty. Is that the way to go? Hi, I am looking at buying a refurbished Nikon D800. It is appealing to buy refurbished: the price is significantly lower! Unfortunately, the camera comes only with a 90 day warranty. Therefore, one feels inclined to buy a warranty that can protect the camera for as long as possible. The warranty offered along- side is a Mack 3 Year Diamond Warranty, for $209.95 I think of the camera as an investment that can hopefully last with good care up to five years. The use I would give to it would be from a low intensity commercial use to a full intensive use after the first year, so that I can recover my investment within three years. The big questions are: Would you buy refurbished? What are the disadvantages of buying refurbished? Is it worth it when one saves about $500, (including the warranty) ?? One saves some $200, (but without the warranty!) There are some, not so good reviews for Mack, when one buys the warranty from them! Comments like: "repair takes ages"; "they don't communicate back with you" http://www.adorama.com/IMXW89.html They also claim they cover worldwide. I wonder what kind of repairs they cover abroad! It arrived without a scratch, rub mark or sign it had been used. It had about 100 actuations on the shutter. Given how well that worked out I, too, am tempted by the refurbished D800. I wouldn't bother with the expensive Diamond warranty, though. If you buy the extended warranty for 2 years, it's only $80 and will cover all of the risks associated with a refurbished camera. For the refurbished Nikon D600 there are three warranties one can buy. The one that caught my attention is this one for $64 It is extended up to three years and it is international. So, (almost) any country in the world. Of course, it doesn't cover any sensor or CCD cleaning, but it may be a good option. It covers products that cost up to $3,000 So, the Nikon D800 can be included under this warranty, I guess. I wonder if one can call the people from Mack warranties and find out more. Anyways, here is the link for this three year extended warranty: http://www.adorama.com/IMXW89.html This is the other Mack 3 Year Diamond Warranty for $209.95 Includes the sensor or CCD cleaning twice. Coverage or service limited to the USA and Canada: http://www.adorama.com/IMXWD3000.html Two years warranty are fine. Unfortunately, I tend to keep my products a bit longer. The extra year would give me some peace of mind. Even if I think of my equipment as a five year investment, I would be very happy to see that at the end, it doesn't cost me more as the price of camera + warranty. The mack warranty is fine and there service times are reasonable in my experience. Go to the Mack web site and read up on the warranties. The Diamond warranty includes impact and accidental damage done to the camera such as you dropping the body and causing significant damage. The inexpensive warranties don't have this coverage. Frankly if your camera spends any amount of time in the field where this type of accidental damage is common $200 is very cheap. Refurb units have always been a good bet in my experience and particularly with the D800 the refurbs seem to get the Autofocus issues cleaned up very nicely by Nikon. Dave Jan 05, 2013 at 05:38 PM

I was looking at b&h website's and they work with another company called square trade: http://www.squaretrade.com/merchant/learnmore/lm_bh.html With Square Trade, insurance will cost between $300 and $400 I don't know if buying the camera from Adorama and the warranty from B&H is possible. But for the price, Mack is cheaper. I just hope, if and when the time arrives, one does not have to wait very long amounts of time. I bought one of the refurbished D800's from Adorama (2299 shipped/no tax/$7 1 year warranty upgrade.) Camera had about 1700 actuations. No focus issues at all, clean sensor, works perfectly. It is a shame to read that the Mack warranty service is way too slow! ... and the top insurance is too expensive. I'd take my chance and use Nikon service if something does go wrong. I've never had a body fail me. You mean by insurance, the one from Square Trade sold by B&H? How much is Nikon service, is it more than $400 every time one uses it? Cameta offers a 1 year of warranty. For the price that is cool. Hopefully, if anything happens to the camera, Cameta's repair center is not so slow! It will be tough, if between year one and year three, one has to send the camera for repair. One may end up paying quite a bit of money. Again, I don't know how cool is Nikon with its service prices.
