p.1 #1 · 5d3 Body Wear...

I did a search but did not come up with anything.

I have experienced a massive amount of wear on my 5D3. The thing looks ancient now from all of the finish wearing on it. Even though we used it in 32 weddings last year, I have never had a camera that shows this amount of wear. Heck, all of the other digital cameras I have ever owned (10d, 20d, 40d, 5d, 5dII) never showed 10% of this amount of wear. My 5DII has been used in probably over 100 weddings, and it still looks almost new.

I did start putting gaff tape all over the thing to protect it more, and where I did, it is fine. Where I did not, though...that's another story.

My question is...is this something that would be covered under warranty? If so, what would they do about it?

thanks!

There was a thread about this a few months ago: here is the link.

I will warn you though, it is 5 pages long and you will find yourself riveted and reading each and every post. An instant classic. Around page 4, the OP provided pics of the damage- is yours similar? I've had mine about 7 months and used heavily with no signs of wear.

Yep...it is like that. It is not as severe in any spot (mainly since I have had the tape all over it since it was about a month old), but any of the places that are exposed are worn way down. Heck, even the finish around some of the buttons by the screen (which are rarely used) show serious wear.

If this camera hasn't gone through the wash I'd sure get in touch with Canon.

I doubt that would do any good. I don't think the will say "ohh yeah, sure. Let's respray that shit for free". IMO, all he is going to get is a reply saying that it is not covered by warranty.

Personally, I love the look of a well used camera.

they could...

I just got one of my 600ex's back from Canon after it took a nasty fall (not normal wear and tear). Not only did they fix what was broken, but they completely replaced several parts of the body that had scuffs on it.

Joel, if you contact Canon I'd be curious to hear what they say. My 5D3 looks bad along the bottom-side from one year of shooting. Rest of body has held up well, but the edges (esp back edge) along bottom side are completely silver. It has never seen a tripod nor had anything mounted to the bottom, just hand-held shooting.

Well they say shooting weddings are like shooting battles.

Anyhow as long as it works I would not worry. You should see some of my lenses.

That is some wear. Is that common on 5 series bodies? I may gafer tape the crap out of mine if I decide to go the 5D3 route.

Are you rough on your gear? No offense because you can do what you like with your gear, but it seems that way.

Nope. As I wrote, I have never had any other camera that had even 10% of this much wear. My 5d2 would be rated 9 out of 10 after using it for 100+ weddings.

Mmm... then it must be Canon taking the cheap route on their paint jobs. Something would have changed in manufacturing.

It's highly likely, IMO, that it is due to poor batch of paint.

What really sucks is your resale value when you decide to upgrade to another body

Just a thought, Bill
