I played with the 24-70 f/4 IS today and it's quite interesting. It's certainly very compact, and built very well. I don't have any sample images so I can't comment on the optics, but the macro feature is interesting. It took a few minutes to fully understand how to use it. I tried it at the close range, and the macro ability is quite good for not being a true macro lens.

Canon is high right now. just as the 24-70 is grossly overpriced. I said the same about 70-300L, and a year later, adorama is selling it at 1099. IF this lens is significantly better than 24-105, IE it has the same prime sharpness as say 70-200 f4 IS, it would be worth, at most, the price of 70-200 f4 IS, or about 1K. at the most. I would consider at that price, only as a landscape shooter. I would pay alittle more than 24-105 and be willing to loose some range on the long end, for less distoriton, and excellent corner sharpness at f8, and maybe smaller from factor.

They're probably not the only ones.

Hunt for the best glass you can and hold on to it.

Fast, sharp, wide or long, it doesn't matter. You can get kit together in numerous ways without paying extortionate rates.

I have a 24-70 and find it frustratingly short, but f4 is unusable at low light (almost dark) events. 20-135 f2L IS anyone?

Your probably right...but I don't really need it right now. I'm thinking a "kit" lens like this will be in the Canon direct refurb list soon enough and within the year I predict they will have an additional 20% off sale pricing it @ or below $960.

I'm getting tired of paying list price and having Canon mark off 12-25% of the price within a year.

Kevindar -- I'm more optimistic. Canon has recently been putting out some great lenses, really improving their line-up (apparently preparing for higher MP bodies). I don't see how this new one can be compared to the old 24-105/4 IS or 70-200/4 IS. First of all, it has a much better IS -- personally, I love my 100L and the same sorts of arguments were made against it because the non-IS Macro was so well established and widely available used. Similarly the 24-105 -- it used to sell around $1200, but price has come down and the lens has sold so well that new versions battle against used and previous kit lenses, driving prices down further. The 70-200/4 L is no different -- its price is down from its premiere.

We've seen the new 24-70/2.8 II come down and some specials making it more practical for consumers. I expect the new 24-70/4 to follow the same trajectory -- high price at first, but probably around $1100 or less in a year.

The real story is that Canon has likely hit another optical and mechanical home run and that will trump the dissatisfaction over the price. . . eventually.

I'm anxious to read Roger's views and experience tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

that is a good point, never seen a lens crash more quickly than the 24-70 II, just two months after release people can't even move them on CL for even $500 under original list, unless a lens or something comes out right before some major event/trip etc. where you really want to use it, it does pay to wait, maybe even just 2-3 months these days and for sure 6 months

Huh? The 24-70 II was next to impossible to get hold of for the first few months of its existence, and even now its on sale for only 10% less than list. Maybe I'm in the wrong part of the world!

A) The 24-105 is going to go away; notice how they seem to be clearing them out?
B) It will be a lot better on the wide end re vignetting/distortion
C) It will have similar AF reliability to other new lenses
D) the price will come down some, and it will sell very well

E) I'd much rather have the 2.8 v2 24-70....

Well, it's slightly lighter than the 24-105, 9 blades vs 8, and 0.7x instead of 0.23x magnification.

Also, it's got hybrid IS, not normal IS like the 24-105, which should make it a bit more useful for macro-ish shots.

The working distance in macro mode is so small as to make it a gimmick and in normal mode, the 24-105L has a much better magnification.

I have no doubt the IQ will be better than the 24-105L, but an updated 24-105L would have been a much better decision

I would have preferred a new 24-105 as well, but perhaps Canon could not achieve the desired IQ or there were other considerations. Even 85mm on the long end would be welcome.

+1

Canon needs a smaller and cheaper kit lens for the 6D anyway.
Maybe some new non-L lens, which will bring the 6D kit price down to $2500 and lower.

The new 24-70/4L will likely become a kit lens for the 5D series only.

Not sure if that was directed at me, but my point was there's no way I could find a 24-70 II for $1800

$2049 is the cheapest I've seen them from legit sellers, except perhaps a tad cheaper on the B&S here
