This thread is exactly what I needed.

The 1D3 is my next camera, if I manage to get the cash....

can owners/ex-owners tell me how it compares in terms of IQ feel to the 5D/1Ds2 lot and the 5D2 ?

I thought IQ wise it's closer to 5D2 rather than the old Digic II (5D1/1d2/1ds2).

By comparison, I mean iso up to 800 tops (after a certain ISO, it'll probably take some distance from 5d2, which is a higher iso camera)

Hi Adrian!

I'm finding the "look" or image quality to be almost exactly like if you took a 5D classic frame and trimmed into it to make the 1.3X crop. Its 10MP at 1.3X equates almost exactly to the 5D's 12.7MP sensor. There might be a tiny bit better IQ and dynamic range in the 1D3, but it's negligible if it exists. ISO 1600 looks a little better on the 1D3 compared to the 5D in my limited use so far.

Where the camera really shines in comparison to the original 5D (besides the "sports" features) is in the improved LCD, LV, and MFA correction for all your lenses. There's plenty more, but those are the high points to me. Oh, better batteries -- lighter weight and longer lasting.

The 5D2 is quite a bit improved IQ and features, plus it's full frame. I find the 1D3 to fit snugly between the two early 5D models for quality and features. But it is in the higher realm due to its 1D build quality.

Since I know you just had an unfortunate problem with your 5D mirror, I hope you don't mind me mentioning a matter you should know about the 1D3:

You may already know, the 1D3 had some serious issues with its earlier production regarding AF problems, resulting in a recall. Canon still takes care of this matter to this day -- similar to the 5D mirror issue. When I got mine a few weeks ago, I noticed intermittent AF irregularities and sent it off to Canon right away. They fixed it at N/C and now the AF is awesome and the camera is a gem -- they also did a complete clean and check for me while it was in. Be warned, you could find an issue with the AF so be prepared to examine it very closely and send it off for repair if you find an issue. If you run into an issue, this is one of the best models to find it out on. Just make sure to have it work in your favor and you'll be happy.

Have fun with your new camera when you get it! I'm sure you'll love it.

1DIII is one of two bodies whose images consistently wow me. In line with Gunzarro, the other is the ancient 5D.
You did good.

I couldn't agree more. The 5D more resembled film than digital with its 'artifacts'.

Gunzorro: for my events I want two bodies...

And the cheaper version would have been 1D2 + 5Dc

The expensive would have been 5D2 + 1d3. But you say hte 1d3 is farther (as IQ) from 5D2 and closer to the 5Dc. So probably 5D2 makes good pair with 1D IV. BOth are out of my reach..

So is it worth a combo like 5Dc + 1D2? or it's worth making the step for 5Dc+ 1d3? (bare in mind that 1d3 is twice the price of 1d2).

As a workflow, looking at the pics, 5dc would pair well with the 1d3, I'm just wondering if it's worth the double stretch for the 1d3 instead of 1d2.

(i owned a 1d2 and 5d2,simultaneously)

Some great pictures on the thread!

Adrian -- I know what you mean, the 1D2 is a great camera, and the price is pretty amazing. You could always get one for now, and use it a few years, then get the 1D3 or 1DIV later. But if you can swing the 1D3 now, I think you will get more out of it right away.

What I've found is that the 1D3 has 25% more pixels, and the Digic 3 is better at handling the imaging than the Digic 2 of the 1D2. The ISO is cleaner too, so you gain about a stop of usable ISO -- the 1D2 I feel okay at 640 or 800, the 1D3 looks really good at 1600. And all ISOs are show better detail than the 1D2. So, the net gain is more that simply the extra resolution from the 10MP. Plus the larger LCD and LV are pretty valuable, as are the easier to use menu -- better than the 5Dc, but similar.

I think the 1D3 could pair with either the 5Dc or 5D2 and work out fine, but it has more in common with 5Dc imaging. 5D2 is quite superior.

I've ordered a double camera bracket I hope to mount on my Manfrotto 3051 to do comparisons like this, where I could stitch lenses between bodies shooting the same subjects. I may give it a try on the 1D2/1D3 to see how they do. Should get it next week and see how I can mount to the Manfrotto hex QR plate.

Are you thinking about a crop 1 series? If so then I'd keep the 5DC. It's good to have FF available.

I would be happy with my 5D MKIII if the images looked like 5DC. You know, a 5DC with the bells and whsitles of the MKIII. IQ of the 5DC is that good (barring extreme ISOs).
