p.1 #1 · Trade 24-70 for 24 1.4G?

I have an opportunity to trade here. I like my 24-70, I use it a fair bit, but I'm interested in this wide prime for no reason other than I've never had

I shoot with a D3s and D800.

Current lens linup:

Nikon 24-70
Nikon 50mm 1.8g
Nikon 85mm 1.8g
Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS

The buyer is asking for my 24-70 + $580CDN.

Worth it?

Don't do it. Buy the new Sigma 35 1.4 for under 1 grand and keep the 24-70, which is a great general lens for the D3s. I owned the 35 1.4G and don't use it as often as the 24-70 or 85 1.4G

The only thing you will gain is ~2 stops. If that is really important, it might be a consideration. Meanwhile, cameras seem to be increasing in ISO capability at least one stop with every release, and you are losing the very valuable speed of use) and flexibility of Nikon's best lens.

No way! Keep the zoom. Unless you need the 2 extra stops or the shallow DOF at 24mm on a regular basis, the zoom will serve you better.

To be honest, I see these as two different lenses for two very different purposes.

I would do it! For a walkaround you can get the 24-85VR for $300. For critical work you have the primes. I tried my friend's 24 1.4 for a week and now I am saving for it. However, the 24-70 + 580 CDN is not a good deal at all. Maybe +$100-$200 but definitely not $580

Some people say 24mm 1.4 is magical. What do you shoot? Do you need more flexibility from the zoom or IQ and rendering as well as light from the 24mm? I would trade it because I like primes and use the money you get toward Sigma 35mm 1.4

I was looking at this and was thinking the same thing. However, there is no way I would make that trade. Like some have said, I would look at getting the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 instead.

I had the 24 for several months and I loved it - phenomenal lens - until the novelty of fast n' wide wore off, so I sold mine. Not the lens' fault, I just got.....bored with it

1+. Totally agree, I've got both and use them both equally. The 24 is wonderful for landscape, walking about cities etc. The 24-70 events, portraits etc. Really wouldn't want to give up either one.

If you want to wide and fairly fast, save some dough and and get a 20 2.8. Very sharp and contrasty all the way across.
