p.2 #8 · p.2 #8 · Chickadees in the Winter Blah light......(4) | |
These are great to see, Karl. Chickadees are a favorite; they are cute and tough and hang around all winter.
About ISO settings: on both my 1D3 and1D4 I've always stuck to "even" settings, multiples of 200, and gotten good results even high up, as long as I didn't underexpose. Then 2 weeks ago I got a wild hair and set the 1D4 to 640, which seemed reasonable under the conditions, and when I got home and looked at the results I thought, "800 would have been cleaner." Just an anecdote, not science, but there may be a lesson there. (Several years ago "natural" ISOs were supposed to be the only way to go, but I had thought we were past that. It's not photon-collection physics that causes the concern, it's how the gain is implemented after the signal gets out of the CMOS. I'm sure that processing compromises are made in order to get the vast flexibility and speed that we are so spoiled by. )
