p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · little guys basketball (u9) [new WB in latter reposts]

Even though the middle-school gyms have some improved lighting with the new high efficiency flourescents, I am still battling the sharpness of the 24-70 f2.8 at iso 1600-3200 and 1/500. Noise is not much of the problem as the lens and I thought I had a decent copy. Strobing is not an option.

These little guys U9 play hard and is their first year in the “travel” league as 3rd graders.

Sitting on my butt the whole time, here is a set from their first two games. I don’t think I am degrading sharpness through unsteady hands (unlike when shooting at 400mm), as I get similar results when I just take a standing still portrait at f2.8.

Any thoughts on getting them sharper? Or, is that about what you would expect from the 7D and this lens? (these were not cropped too much from original)

An even dozen.

-Guy

A lot of potential here. I'm not so sure your issue is sharpness. The first two things I see are exposure issues and white balance. A bunch of your photos look under-exposed to me -- and that will certainly make them feel "muddy." LoOn my monitor, photos 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 could all use a boost in the exposure.

The next thing I see is a wide variance in White Balance. Simply compare the color of the white jersey in photo #1 to photo #2. If you can look at them side-by-side I think that may help you. If you can get those two items under control, I think you will be much happier with your basketball photos.

Finally, don't be afraid to bump up the ISO to get the exposure where you want it. Don't know which body you are shooting, but I rarely get the chance to shoot ambient light for basketball at 1600-3200 ISO. 6400-12800 ISO are much more typical.

The first year my daughter played travel basketball I took photos. After that mom and I concentrated on the game. Be careful the camera doesn't take away any mental memories.

The memories will be more important than the pics. There is much to miss if your head is behind the camera.

I'm not saying to leave the camera home, just be careful. My daughter did not like the pics, she was playing to win, not for memories. I had a hard time understanding that.

+1 that the exposure and WB needs to be tweaked on these photos but overall I think they are well within the acceptable range. I've shot my 7d/24-70 combo with just ambient light and have had similar results. If strobing is not an option you may want to look into renting/borrowing an 85mm 1.8. Although on a crop body it might get too tight shooting from underneath the basket where it appears all these were taken from. Does the schools not allow strobes?

Chrisbergmann - thanks for the response. I am not positive that this league / schools would allow strobes, but i am there only for a 28 minute (play time) game for my son. As it is, some of the refs are hugely egotystical and barely let me sit baseline. I don't think an 85mm will work in most of these gyms as it will push me much more into the corner vs under the net. If I were to go that long, i would use my 70-200 mkII for sharpness, as I would be worried about the narrow DOF from the faster stop of the 1.8.

SO HERE I AM Reposting with WB and exposure tweaks/bumps, not sure how it came out so wrong the first time… My guess is that most of you willl find them better (I find them a little cool for my tastes, but now the WB measures more evenly.)

So wiht the better WB and exposures, now Any thoughts on getting them sharper? Or, is that about what you would expect from the EOS 7D and Canon 24-70 f2.8 mkI and this lens? (these were not cropped too much from original)

WB looks better on the revisions, consider getting the 85mm 1.8 for basketball - sharper and will allow a faster shutter speed
