Thanks ts232, Lots of cacti have regular patterns if you isolate a portion and look closely.
This species has tiny, thread-like spines (glochids) that are very difficult to remove. One method that is purported to work is to spread Elmer's Glue, let it dry and peel it off. the spines come out with the glue.
