Now some shops here in Holland have lowered the price of the Canon 300 mm F/2.8 IS II to a sub-6000 Euro level, I am seriously considering the price of this beauty. It is still a lot of money for my standards, so I would love to see your favourite pictures taken with the 300 II to help me pull the trigger …

My intended use is mainly sports photography (field hockey and soccer), but I also love to do the occasional nature photography. Because the 300 seems to take the extenders 1.4 and even 2 very well, I would also like to see your favorite picture taken with extenders ...

Please feel free to give me some additional comments about your experience with the 300 II.

I have the vI that I bought on the buy/sell here in the fall, and it is a great lens. I took similarly framed shots with it and my 70-200 with a 1.4 on it, and even on the back of the camera you can see the 300 has a special quality. OOF BG is rendered creamy smooth, and your subject is crazy sharp! By all accounts the vII is even better... Can't wait to use it more and get better with it.

I took this lens, which is light-weight as far as wildlife lens concerned on a recent trip. It performed flawlessly and I dare to say that it is a tad "sharper" than its predecessor

. Exif data is shown; a 1.4X TC is used for the 420mm.

Excellent images, everyone and thank you very much, Jay and Tony.

Again, this lens is not only superb optically but it is really nimble enough and combined with a crop body, the reach is not bad at all for larger wildlife and/or not so skittish wildlife. That being said, here are a few more images from the same trip and now all images were shot using a 5D Mark III.

Can anyone who has had both the mkI & mkII versions of the IS lens comment on the weight difference between them? I see the weight numbers, but just wondering in practice how much of a difference you notice. I have the 300mm non-IS still, and was considering an upgrade to the IS version for the lighter weight lens with IS, however I wonder if I should be patient and wait to find a MKII at some point, it isn't like there's anything wrong with my non-IS version, so I can be patient.

I sold the original IS version long time ago before because I felt that it didn't quite get used that much. Since I couldn't refuse a really good deal on the Mark II, I wanted to try that FL again and it has become one of my favorite lenses now. Like I posted previously, I believe that there is a slight IQ increase between the two but I couldn't and therefore didn't do any comparison. The weight decrease is definitely noticeable to me and it makes it more a pleasure to carry that around and actually use it, as well since the lens balances very well, which is actually more important than the mere difference in weight. Although a smidgen longer but it is slightly lighter than the 200mm f/2.0L, BTW. Hope this helps.

Great, thanks for the info. Now if I can someday get lucky on a good deal like you did...lens is still pretty new...hopefully in time some folks will decide they don't use it much and sell theirs on the B & S boards.
