Kind of a puff piece but thought some may find this mainstream media report interesting.

Good grief, is that a silly premise. The iPhone has to chew through a lot of intermediate camera categories before it gets anywhere near the Leica!

Uh.. Leica compact sales have remained steady despite the huge drop in sales by Japanese brands.
Rubbish puff piece not based at all on facts.

It's an average reporting piece about Leica's business strategy with a sensational title to grab eyeballs. The word "iPhone" was never uttered during the piece.

Nothing to see here.

Will the car survive the era of the plane? Same answer, totally different market,
But when smart phones can produce shallow DOF shots like a FF 50/1.2 with IQ like the D800/5DIII then...
yeah, in a "The king is dead, long live the king" sort of way.

I think all serious camera offerings will only benefit from the cell phone era. The phone cameras introduce people to photography and increased the size of the market making more potential customers for companies like Leica.

Looks like they just wanted to put a catchy title as usually...

I think the analyst who discussed the use of SW emulation to achieve the "haptics" of a Leica camera is where the iPhone handle comes in, is that idea far fetched or not?

Haven't read it yet however I'd say that Leica will still be there long after the 'iphone' will be a footnote in a boring history lesson. Anyone seen an iphone 3 recently? How long did it take to be forgotten? Saw an M6 being used the other day though.

That's what I use. It's a hand-me-down from my better half.

OTOH, I have a 1DX, and she sometimes uses a 5D.

Not so sure about that, people still hang onto _very_ old apple hardware

Leica is the equivalent of the Rolex watch of Cameras. Rolex sells a fraction of watches in the market place compared to Casio but they are quite profitable.

There is always a market for a 15K limited edition leopard skin M9 hand signed body.

Apple lost its main head, it will slowly die sooner or later..

And Apple isnt Leica, it doesnt have 100 years behind. Most important is that Leica isnt cult for "nothing". Despite lens being quite expensive, they will be pretty surely usable 20 years from now. Which usually cant be said about any other lens from regular manufacturers.

Plus for example R6.2 with few Crons will be viable as long as there will be film to use. How long will be current iPhone usable and used? 1 year.. or even two?

Its bit like Rolls-Royce, Ferrari and lots of others.. they didnt die cause theres a lot of manufacturers producing expensive fast cars.

And one thing, Apple is selling something you dont need (not really need). Leica sells things that if you are rich enough photographer might need or at least desperately crave for.

I dont get people selling own kidneys to buy iPad. But I would get person doing same for Leica. Lens from them might outlive my kidney!

The first iPhone may be a cult item, but I sincerely doubt that the first iPad is. Maybe the first iPod?

Silly question.
The Leica is a luxury fashion item, therefore unlikely to be affected by advancement in photo taking technology.
