p.1 #1 · Holiday Hoops Classis (HS Boys)

It's been a while since Ihave posted here in the Sports. Been shooting a bit, but more than that, I was slammed at Christmas doing sports posters and family portraits for Christmas. Now that they have all been delivered, it's back to the gym to see if I remember how to shoot basketball.

This is the championship of a Christmas basketball tournament. I have been hired by the booster club to take action shots (of the team in white) thus is is very one-sided in terms of which team I shot. All shots in the gallery are Nikon D3s married to Nikkor 70-200. EXIF in tact. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Hey Rick,

Really nice set of pics. Good facial expressions and timing is right on. Good stuff.

When did you pick up a D3s? Amazing camera isn't it?

a couple nits: #11 is a great capture but player is a bit oof. WB is not consistent, I like wb in #7

You have a lot of good shots of players driving and alley-ooping. Any other types of shots?

Some really nice shots and VERY good action. Shots with 6K - 10K ISO are just missing that sharpness that I prefer but given the environment, look pretty good.

I agree with Jeff. I think it would be good to get out from under the hoop a little and also get some shots from a different perspective.

Grant -- Thanks for looking. I have always appreciated your feedback.

Picked up the D3s at the very end of football season. LOVE it. The D3 was awesome, but I've never shot a better camera for sports than this D3s. Amazing is the perfect word.

Really struggling with WB issues in this particular gym. Old Sodium vapors have been wearing me out with a white, red, green, yellow cycle. First go of it with this body in this gym so tried AWB -- think I will go with a K setting next time based on my performance this time.

There are tons of other shots, but seeing as this shoot was specifically for the booster club to shot "individual highlight photos," I didn't spend much time focusing on dribbling, playing defense, coaches, and free throws. Here are a few others....

I agree. 6k-10k on the ISO is not nearly the same as what you get when you are strobing and coming in at 400-800 ISO. Not allowed to strobe this gym -- so I just have to make the most of it. Think I will take the 300mm on Tuesday and shoot a quarter with it just for grins. See what I come up with.

If you improve every time out as much as you did between your first and second basketball post, we all will be asking you for advice. Hang in there. It really does get easier.

Hey Wendell,

I appreciate your comments. Still feel like there's a bit more to know about the body, but so far so good.

Enjoy the D7000. It will be a nice addition to your kit. Extra reach and high(er) ISO is always nice to have in your back pocket.

Rick,

Nice set there. I agree about moving out from under the hoop but you probably have someone asking for specific shots ect..... always tough to get what the people paying the bill want and being a "creative" photographer and getting those "WOW" shots.

I just grabbed a D3s as well and now I am having issues with WB all over again. Just when I thought I had all of my cameras dialed in at the venues I shot it has changed.

I like the hand over the face in 8 and the guys legs in 10
All of these are nice - too bad you were stuck at such a high ISO but I don't think most people will see the tiny lack of sharpness
The D3S seems to be "the bomb" for sports
I'm new to shooting basketball and have been trying to leave the rim & net in view but maybe need to think tighter is better.

Paying gigs are what it's all about, but they do put a few hand-cuffs on us from time to time.

As for making the move to the D3s, there is no doubt that I am getting images in conditions where I NEVER would have thought about shooting before. The ISO is stupid good, but you are right on the money about learning everything all over again when it comes to re-learning the settings for venues where we shoot all the time.

Mr. Farver, the D3s is simply the best sports camera I have ever owned. So powerful.

Thanks for your nice comments on the photos. There's no doubt that things get a little muddy when the ISO gets so high, but I'm with you on the sharpness.

Basketball can be a real bear to shoot. Varying lighting conditions can make it a pain in the neck to get good clean shots, but I personally love the challenge. Love to see things in my pictures that fans in the stands never get to see -- like the hand across the face in number 8.

Keep shooting away. Looking forward to following your progress.

The D3s opens a whole new world when it comes to sports photography. Should have listened to you a year ago and bought it then....however, I must say by going through the other bodies, I have a whole new appreciation for the capabilities of this camera.

I only have one question.... Where are the refs in these shots? Anytime I try something from that angle all I end up with is Ref Butt!
