Only for some lenses, for others such as the superteles and lenses like the 85L the price seems to stay high. 800L is now dearer than at release despite a period where it dropped in price from launch.
Agreed.
Also, the used price for 'replaced' lenses often spikes after the Mk II versions appear in the market. For example, considering used lenses in near mint condition, the 24-70/2.8L sold for about $1113 in Jan 2012, and its current value is about $1400. Similarly, the 70-200/2.8L IS price rose from a steady value of around $1450 for 2010 through early 2012, to a high of $1621 in Sept-2012, now it's back to about $1450.
Current used prices for 85/1.2L Mk I and Mk II in E to E+ condition are very close at about $1180 and $1280, respectively (d = 8%). The separation is greater for M- and LN lenses, at $1480 and $1720 (d = 14%).
