I see so many on the B&S board now. I was also thinking about selling mine ever since getting the 24-70 MKII. Is this new version of the 24-70 2.8 a 24L killer?

I'm selling my 24/1.4L Mk I because of the 1DX, more than because of the 24-70/2.8L II, both of which I own. I sometimes used the 24/1.4L for higher shutter speeds in low light, at say 1600 to 3200 on a 1DsIII; otherwise, I rarely used the 24/1.4L for it's ultra-wide aperture and relatively shallow DOF. Now that I'm happy using ISO 12800 on my 1DX, I don't need a fast 24mm lens anymore. My 35L is also in jeopardy. I rarely use wide apertures for wide angle lenses. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, I will be keeping my fast lenses from 50mm and longer, because I often use their ultra-fast apertures for DOF effects, not simply to get more light for increased shutter speed.

The new 24-70 is still two stops slower than the 24/1.4. This alone makes them a different pair of shoes. It depends what you need at the 24 mm FL end. I started with my 24-70 vers. I lens as walk around lens but rarely use it now anymore. It is a very good lens, but I transitioned to use the 24/3.5 T/S and my 50 mm lenses instead. I rarely use 70 mm FL in my photos, and I can accomplish the rest just fine with 24 and 50 mm, sometimes in addition with the 35/1.4. Personally, I prefer prime lenses a lot more than zoom lenses in this FL range. For event/wedding shooters and photojournalists the 24-70/2.8 makes sense.

I used to take and use my 24mmL quite a bit more in combination with the 24-105mm for all kind of photographic outing. Now, the 24-70mm Mark II has narrowed gap of the aperture speed. Essentially, I agree with what Jim posted. I rarely use the 24mmL to get the bokeh from a wide angle lens at aperture wider than f/2.0. It is a great lens alright but it doesn't get used much now.....

If you are a photojournalist, and not using it, you have a nice opportunity to get one and improve your work. Nothing else can do what it does.

I still love mine, no zoom is going to replace it

I'm betting that you are seeing, to some extent, the typical aftermath of the hoopla surrounding the introduction of any new version of a lens, after which some who were swept up in it move on to something else.

The 24mm f/1.4 II is a fine lens, but the utility it provides is not for everyone.

I thought I could sell mine, but I was wrong. I had not sold it yet when I took it to one of the shows I shoot. There is no way I could have used acceptable ISOs w/o the lens. Also love the wide angle/wide aperture combo. It is really unique. If you are using your 24L stopped down for landscape, the 24-70 II is a great replacement.

I think it is the 24-70 II. I may occasionally miss f/1.4 at 24mm but I mostly used it stopped down and same for plenty of others. The 24-70 II is pretty fast at f/2.8 and the quality is finally there stopped down in a zoom at 24mm on FF. I just got rid of mine. It had been one of my favorite lenses, but I needed the money for the 24-70 II and it'd be way too extravagant to have kept it just for some f/1.4 shots here and there in my case. That said I can very much see why some would want to keep in addition to a 24-70 II (or instead of).

But I think between the timing and the comments I've seen that the sudden bump in for sale is due to the 24-70 II.

Contrary to claims of the fast aperture crowd, some people do uses lenses stopped down a lot AND no, not all lenses perform the same at f/8. Many had turned to the 24 1.4 II to get some crisp corner to corner stopped down performance on FF since the 24-105/24-70/24 2.8 of the old era didn't cut it and some wanted AF and flexibility for some other stuff as well instead of 24 T&S II. So yeah many got it mostly for f/1.4, but OTOH there were also many who got it more for other reasons and the 1.4 was just a nice bonus to use here and there.

So it served many very well and they liked using it a lot these last few years, but now they see they can do the landscape aperture part of it just about as well and also get a zoom to come along with it and they valued the zoom aspect more than the 1.4 aspect and accepted that trade off in favor of the 24-70 II.

How would slow F2.8 kill fast F1.4?

You nailed it exactly and, lately, there has been a lot new goodies to move on to.

Since the realease we saw a couple of excellent 24mm lenses ts-e, is 24-70, 24-70is, tamron 24-70vc. Sometimes are better to sell - sometimes are better to buy

I feel the same way with the 24-70 MKII but don't think I can sell my 24L on here without losing. I also have the 1DX so that 24-70 on it kicks butt!

Many people prefer a prime because it will focus better and be sharper at f2.8-f5.6. With the new 24-70 ii these advantages aren't there any more. So, if you don't need to shoot f1.4-f2.8 the reason for the prime becomes much less.

Personally I still love low dof shots so the new zoom won't replace them. However I'll be believing in the new 24-70s ability to shoot at 2.8 and nail focus WAY more than the old lens.

If this severely overpriced lens is sharp doesn't mean it could "kill" anything. My 24II is sharp and I would better get two fast L primes instead of one slow zoom.

The 24L Mk 2 is a specialist lens with a specialist market. If you need a wideangle f1.4, f2 or the sharpest f2.8 (and don't want a TSE) then it is a better lens that the excellent general purpost 24-70 f2.8

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=787&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=480&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=4

Its horses for courses, the zoom (subject to price of course) will fulfill the needs of a wider range of photographers, the 24L is for less universal specific needs with a smaller market IMHO.

24L is a gorgeous lens btw!

I love mine. It is one of the best and most "creative" lenses out there. It cannot be replaced by a f2.8 zoom since f2.8 is still awfully slow compared to f1.4.

You will always see people selling stuff to buy other (overpriced) gear.

+1, it is new toy effect. in 2-3 month same people will post "sold it since I need money and it is collecting dust ..."

So, are you saying - you are Ok if Canon will stop making anything faster than F2.8, just make it sharp and expensive and zoom and "everyone" will be automatically happy? That will "kill" all fast L primes?
