p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Printer recommendation - Epson 3000 vs. 3880?

I am thinking it is about time to retire my Epson 1400 printer. It has worked very well over the years, but I continue to have occasional challenges with color rendition that may be out of gamut for the printer (mainly reds). I am an amateur, print only for my own enjoyment and give occasional gifts to friends. I do have a bias towards Epson because of the good experience with the 1400.

Based on preliminary research, I am trying to decide between the Epson 3000 and 3880. The 3880 seems to be a favorite for posters on the forum, not sure if it is overkill for me, right now 13 x 19 is the largest size I print. On the other hand, I would like to have this printer last me awhile, so going a bit beyond current needs makes sense.

Any advice from forum members would be much appreciated.

Ink cost!

Epson 3880 ink costs about $53.39 for 80 ml or .67 cents per ml.
Epson 3000 ink costs $26.50 for 29.5 ml or $1.02 per ml.

Unless you print sparingly based on ink cost alone the 3880 is the way to go.
You will find that color rendition on the Epson 3800 series printers will meet your discerning eyes more so than the consumer 3000 model. It is not overkill, but it does take up more desk space. Measure and be prepared!

The printers are (3000) $569 versus (3880) $839 only $270 difference and with the 3880 you get more than $270 worth of extra ink! The 3880 is the way to go.

I bought a 3000 when the price difference was $750. Now with the difference at $300, there's no reason not to get a 3880, unless space is an issue (or you only print occasionally, and never over 13x19"). For reference, the 3000 has been great.

Don't be put off by this. Yes, the 3880 is bigger but not that much bigger. The 3880 is still fundamentally a desktop printer. Check the numbers carefully.

I think I will go ahead with the 3880. Hard to imagine growing out of that printer. Thanks to all for the input!

BTW in case anyone is wondering I ordered my 3880 Monday. Later on if I need 24" I'll get one as well. Needed to have cut sheet borderless printing, that is what I print mostly.

If they come out with a 24" printer that can do borderless cut sheet as well as roll paper I will be annoyed!!
