My new-to-me d700 started exhibiting weird lines on a portion of photos recently. At first I thought it was the grip which I had just started using but taking it off didn't help. I've also tried switching and formatting memory cards, re-setting the camera and various settings but they are still there on a certain number of photos (about 15% of them.) The photos without the lines are perfect. I searched the web but couldn't find this exact issue, anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

Oddly, I had that with my older D90 and turns out it was the USB card reader to my computer so the transfer was glitchy. Found out by recopying the photos and sometimes they turned out okay. Perhaps check that link?

The problem appears on the LCD screen as well so it happens before I transfer it

ISO 12800 according to the EXIF. Pushing the limits of the D700?

That is caused by a file corruption.
Have you been formatting the card in the computer?
Always do it in the Camera.
You may have to replace the card.

It happens at the any ISO, it's not a bad card. I've tried three, formatted all in camera.

Looks like one of the sensor read-out channels has met its maker. I don't believe Nikon doesn't sensor repairs so the entire sensor complex would need replacing if that's the case.

Looks nasty!

Please, I don't want what you got!
Clean it and your hands, wrap in a plastic Zip Lock, and send it to Melville.

Nikon will diagnose the problem and give you a free Estimate.

Q. Are you shooting in raw format, or jpg format ? Is the raw data affected or just the jpg ?

Q. Are you using or are you near an electronic device such as a GPS unit or mobile phone when you take the photos ?

Q. Does it only happen after you take a lot of photos or use the rear screen to view images, or can it happen with the first photo ? i.e. might it be an in-camera temperature-related problem ?

If the problem is not with external interference then that pretty much only leaves a camera defect (or spontaneous mass failure of CF cards) but intermittent problems are a nightmare to find and diagnose. Send it in for service but include a concise and legible written explanation of the symptoms and circumstances with sample photos in both raw and jpg format and at least one print. Give them absolutely no excuse to not see what the problem looks like so that even if they can't reproduce it quickly they should know to keep looking rather than blame your competence. Make sure that the files you submit all have full EXIF data.

Setting aside the banding issue --- am I the only one wondering what is going on in that photo?

Update:

After talking on the phone with a local tech and sending him the photos he agreed with what people here thought that it looked like a bad or corrupt CF card. I had tried formatting two new cards in the camera so it seemed unlikely to be the case but I bought another new CF card and it's working fine so far. He said there could be something with the camera that needs repair that is corrupting the cards but hopefully it's ok. Although it seems improbable, both my SanDisk Extreme III cards ordered directly from Amazon appear to be bad (different orders too, one is a 16gb, one an 8gb.)

Ericande,
About one year ago there was a rash of counterfeit cards on the market.
Some of them were branded SanDisk and some were bought through Amazon.
