p.1 #1 · Thailand- salt of the earth #4

Last of this little series.
Not special as photographs- but the series has been about a commercial activity almost half-way around the world.
My main photographic interest is mostly documentary anyhow .

Hi Charlie,

This is one of my favorites from this scene.

I especially like the figure on left with the load on his shoulders.

The composition and view give the eye some interesting things to see in the frame.

Personally I'd like to see the faces in less shadow.. Perhaps some selective lightening?

Me, too, Ed.
I squeezed out as much detail in the facial shadows as I could.
Look at my three other posts taken at these salt flats- one of them (#2) has some sunlight on a man's face.
The problem is the light was very harsh, and our tour bus stopped with the workers between us and the sun. That kind of back-light is very difficult for candid shooting- but it's what existed.
Of course- I could also say that such menial labor crushes the human spirit and turns the workers into unidentifiable entities, and that was the feeling I was trying to depict.
It wouldn't be what I was trying to do- but it might hold up in court , (If the jury was made up of pretend poets.)

Charlie:
If you did a square crop of the left hand side, it could be a special photograph!

Well done! The simplicity of this shot - clean background etc - makes it my fav too.

Thanks Douglas and Jim.
If I do that crop I'd lose the man on the right as he rakes the salt. I rather like him there to help tell the story.
